It surely is not a copy especially since itīs not a theoretical work. For example as far as I know Alterman looks at something completely different against the Fianchetto than Pedersen.

After 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.Nf3 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Alterman like Pedersen recommends 4... e5 5.Nb5 d5. I think the coverage here is very good. I canīt compare to "Play the Benko" though since I donīt have it.

PS: I find the assumption Quality Chess would publish a work which simply copys something from another publisher somewhat insulting to them.

I rather think that the writer meant to write 'the same as'.
Many non-native speakers here. English as International Language (EIL) paradigm. In such cases language is often more direct, nuances lost. Some inadvertent offence not surprising, we have to try to read positively looking for intended projected meaning. Suspect this here. Certainly reads that way.

Alterman lectures were cheerful, but too wishy-washy, Dzinzi habit of leaving key stuff out. As an example, The Milner Barry French series was notable for that.
Seems as though the Black Gambit Book may be better produced, more rigorous. Will have a look.

The English defence was for me a nice surprise. I have always made a living out of beating the crap out of people playing that kind of line, but I was pleasantly surprised by his attitude, which also seems to hold up.

What line does he reccommend against the English? I'm thinking of buying it but I want to be sure it ins't a copy of Pedersen's "Play The Benko Gambit".

Did some working with it. I like the book a lot. The strongpoints are the explanations in combination with the chosen lines/games. The Benko, Blumenfeld and "Vaganian" are very well explained, though the theory prolly isnt at the highest level. The sidelines against 1d4 are more of a bonus, though interesting. The English defence was for me a nice surprise. I have always made a living out of beating the crap out of people playing that kind of line, but I was pleasantly surprised by his attitude, which also seems to hold up.
In short a very good book for players up to 2000, though dont expect a bullet proof repertoire. On the other hand you'll learn more from this than from a repertoire book.

Just got the book from the real santaclaus. It looks very good. I just browsed through it and it would seem like a good mix between explanation and theory.
The meat is the Benko, Blumenfeld and the "Vaganian" and the rest is about d4-specials (torre and the likes) and the English defense. Seems like he is quite good at "teaching by example".

Will come back after I have actually done more than just browsing Wink

Mark, your link is to an article focusing on  Jennifer Shahade's excellent book, Chess Bitch. I really enjoyed the book, but I don't see what it has to do with this discussion.

Neither do I.
Indeed I managed to provide the wrong link ánd forgot to check. Alas it doesn't make sense anymore to delete or change it, so it will stay in this thread as testimony of my stupidity.

How does Alterman's book compare to Play the Benko by Nicolai Pedersen ? Do they cover exactly the same ground ? Am I right in thinking that the Pedersen book is aimed at a higher graded audience with more experience of these openings ?

In that case, as I mentioned, Alterman gives excellent instruction for the "starting out" group.

He does, but I would have like a bit more attention to the best lines for the virtual opponent. Sometimes he does that too: his treatment of Topalov-Kramnik (Cochrane Gambit) is very good.

In that case, as I mentioned, Alterman gives excellent instruction for the "starting out" group. But I guess I expect the very best books not only to provide a good explanation of the opening but also "secret" weapons that the owner of the book can use to good effect.

Again, I really do think Alterman's instruction is excellent on ICC, it just doesn't go the next step.

I've studied several of the "Gambit Guide" episodes by Alterman on ICC. Alterman discusses the history of the opening and studies key games in great depth.

I love his videos but I do have major reservation: in all of the series that I've studied, I feel that he has left out a critical element. He doesn't go the final step of suggesting new ways to play the position.

I haven't seen his book, but I do wonder how many original ideas he shares with the reader. Does he seem to hold back in the book too?

Could be the case, but that wouldnt be a problem for me. Firstly this goes for most books and analysis and secondly I am more interested in the understanding of these lines than in the actual moves. Sort of an extended 'starting out'.

I just think the same. The "Gambit Guide" is mostly a motivation series. On the other hand I really love this style of presentation and it strongly reminds me to Moskalenko's French books (he also feels free to sidestep critical moments if they are not convinient to him). But (and this may go for Alterman's books as well): we are not Super-GMs but mere amateurs and as a starting point - to become familiar with various opening lines - this kind of presentation (I would even say: he should not point out flaws to deeply - because then you miss your own way of investigation which is needed to really understand what is going on.) is optimal for the target audience of ICC.
