Thanks for the link  Grin !

I use CPT, but what I mean is rather drawing trees that give you an overview about the opening you're investigating - a sort of map. It's a condensed form of a ChessBase 'book', not covering every single move ever played of the particular opening, but - depending of the details you want to go into - only the major ones, and it shows you a two-dimensional picture of the opening.
Whereas CPT is used for memorizing single moves, such a tree would be useful e.g. for memorizing the structure of the whole.

When I'm back from holiday, I'll try to post a little tree as illustration. At the moment, I'm only experimenting with this sort of 'learning tool', but so far my impression is that it'll be helpful!

Best regards,

Chess Position Trainer - now CPT 4 on the way, looks a cracking update from beta. 3 was free, tho bit buggy I found. Good when working.
and
Chess Opening Wizard. Commercial. Easy to use.

I think these may suit. If not, try here:

A delayed Merry Christmas to everybody!

These days I'm quite busy with trying to get one step further in understanding my beloved QGDEx line, and I'm trying to get a better organization of my work and a better overview by creating a corresponding tree. The knots are positions, and the edges are the moves.

As it would be extremely time consuming to draw (and redraw and reredraw ...) all these lines and squares, I use a program called 'yed', which is free downloadable from the internet (this is also the reason for me to start this topic in 'Chess and Computers'). One very nice feature of this program is that it provides a lot of basic patterns and tons of additional parameters to get a neat layout of your tree. Whenever you add a new knot, you can just push a button (o.k., two or three), and you have a neat picture again, which is a huge advantage compared to Visio, e.g.
An advantage over mindmapping programs (at least those I know) is the possibility for a child knot to have not only one, but as many parent knots as you like - extremely useful for move order issues.

I'd like to know if any of you has tried such an approach before, how your experiences are and if there's software that might be even more suitable for the purpose discribed above? (For example, in yed it's quite time consuming to enter a chess diagram, as for each such diagram you first have to create it's own JPG file).

Best regards,
