To answer it, you've first got to decide whether you want to begin 1 ... e6 as Black or whether you wish to play (or have to play) 1 ... f5.

I'd learn the anti-Dutch first, because they are pretty common at club level. 4. I'm not really sure what you mean, because White doesn't really play the Dutch. If you mean the Bird, I don't play it. 5. I would guess 1.Nf3 f5 2.d3, ever since the Carlsen-Dolmatov game. 8. Yes. 9. There is Beating the Indian Defences, that has a chapter on 1.d4 f5 2.Nc3

Since MacDonald seems to indicate that the Stonewall should be learned first, why is this variation given less attention than the Leningrad Dutch? 3. What order of variations would you use to build a repertoire in the Dutch Defense? Why? 4. If you intended to play the Dutch as White and as Black would this change your answer to question 3? Why? 5. What are the lines that Black has to be concerned about outside the Stonewall, Leningrad, and Classical Dutch these days? 6. What would be your top picks for sources in each section above? Why? 7.
