At least I could not access any of he features I thought were interesting.

I'm curious to know which features interested you?

a general chess site like chessanytime has lots of competitors (won't mention exact names because don't want to advertise, but you know the sites I mean), the only way chessanytime could be a big site is if you chuck a lot a money at it (advertising, give the design/style of the site a complete makeover), and even then there's a lot of risk it might not work, tbh I really can't see any reason why someone would use chessanytime over one of the more established chess sites.

Yes, I agree with you that they are in a very difficult market (not just competing with the well-known playing sites, but with a lot of new free ones as well), but they have been around a long time and they do have a lot of paying subscribers. Also, I agree that they could do with a change of design, and make it more obvious that the site is not a news site... but a site where you can play chess! Roll Eyes

Seing this thread is the first time I've heard of them as well. I'll just give my opinion from a business student perspective: I don't think chesspub can get any benefit in partnering up with them, everyone knows what chesspub is, and I expect most professional chess players use it. Also not to mention chesspub has no natural competitors to worry about.

Lots of interesting points, thanks! However, I didn't make it clear that it is not the Forum that is linking with ChessAny Time, but the main (mother?) site www.chesspublishing.com, and we can always use a bit of free publicity ... and more subscribers!
However, having said that, maybe there could be advantages for the ChessPub Forum - maybe we could setup a room on ChessAnyTime just for Forum members, or maybe Forum members could get a big reduction?!

I think they should consider opening their site up a bit to allow people to see whether they want to stick around.

I think you can get 7 days free use if you sign up? Anyway, I also get the impression that it is a bit 'closed', and there is not much info about what you get.

I tried that but you get only very restricted access during that time. Essentially only online playing. At least I could not access any of he features I thought were interesting.

Personally I think the natural next step for chesspub would be to create it's own chess news site, then you can just make money from ad space like the other ones do. But yeh there's lots of idea that could be considered, on topic though: I don't see any benefit for chesspub, from chessanytime's perspective though it would be great for them.

This thread has acted as free advertising for the site, and still nobody seems to have played on it.

I think they should consider opening their site up a bit to allow people to see whether they want to stick around.

I used to play on ChessAnyTime.com when I took a computer programming class nearly a decade ago. It used to just be the simple Java website for playing when I was on it though - now it seems that they have much more. It was fine when I was there - nothing amazing, but not too shabby either. I would have to play and peruse the website a lot more to draw some updated conclusions though.

By when do you have to decide? Why don't you ask them for a few free temporary accounts. They have a free 7-day trial offer but that seems to just cover the online playing section.

There is no rush, I just wondered if anyone had any experience of them. They've given me an account and it seems to work OK. Smiley

Nobody? The reason I ask is that they have proposed a link-up with us.
