So at least you agreed it's playable. Position is very interesting after 15...Qc7.
Just remember this is the Bg5 variation of the most popular Sicilian and it often leads to very unclear and somewhat illogical moves, like the Poisoned Pawn where black is willing to lose 5 or 6 tempi just to grab a single pawn.

I see a great deal has happened since the last time I posted. I will make couple of points:

1. I don't have a refutation of 12. ... Ra7 if I had I would try to publish it somewhere or I would post a large pgn file here.

2. On the question of whether Black should play 15. ... Qxb2 or 15. ... Qc7 my argument for the former has been purely 'human'.  In those lines Black gets some material for all the deficiencies of his position and the Queen serves both as an attacker and a defender. I don't see any upside for Black when (s)he plays 15. ... Qc7, there are only two results possible.

Ok. As regards the variation in question, it's not refuted.

I've deleted the offensive posts in question. Jejega, please refrain from making personal attacks in future.

I apologise for not being active on the forum as a poster or moderator in the last two weeks. I've had several new commitments from about two weeks ago.

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 a6 6. Bg5 e6 7. f4 b5 8. e5 dxe5 9. fxe5 Qc7 10. exf6 Qe5+ 11. Be2 Qxg5 12. O-O Ra7 13. Qd3 Rd7 14. Ne4 Qe5 15. Nf3 Qxb2 16. Qe3 Bb7 17. Beside all this the obvious 21. cxb5 looks problematic as well: 21. ... O-O 22. Ng5 f5 23. Qb4 Rd2 24. Bf3.

Best is 23...Rd4! 24 Rb2 Rb4 25 Ra2 Bd4 26 Kh1 ab and black can be happy

22...Rd6 is very interesting for black and I don't see any real advantage for white.
20...Qc5 could be an improvement on this line as well

I meant what I said, and no, I certainly wasn’t suggesting you yourself are slow in these matters. On the contrary -- I’ve observed with admiration your acting, on those boards where you do have authority, with the firmness/swiftness that’s been so lacking here. I’ll PM you about this -- but it might be a few days, as I’m up to my ears.

Say what you mean.  I have no power here.  Is there someplace where I do have authority where I should do something that I am not doing?  Please say what, here or in a PM.  Or say where do we have insufficient oversight.

Showing some respect would be a good start. I don't care to much about the rest of it. You can't tell me you've never used an engine before.

I sent a message to Tony about missing monitors in this part of the board.

Risk implies there is an upside for Black. There is not. Can you name me a top 20 player who plays Polugaevsky on a regular basis? How about top 50? Top 100?

We know that fashion is present in chess as well. The other variation you advocate 6 Bg5 e6 7 f4 h6 8 Bh4 Qb6 was not on anyone's repertoire 5 years ago.
Now it's all the rage. If someone had recommended it in 2007 you would have been the first one to tell us no super GM plays it.
You have no personnality and just follow the strongest players games maybe hoping you can be as good as them one day. At least stop dreaming my friend.

Bewilders me that people get heated on a chess web site. It is a board game. And people argue with people they have never met about it.

Ease up people.

If you want to play it, great, play it. Likely white players at amateur level OTB will struggle. Memorise it well, white may not remember. All the best. Amazes me that any amateur plays Bg5 to be honest.

If you want to discuss on a chess theory site, offer analysis. That's the purpose here surely?

But stop the playground ad hominem.
Analysis.
MODERATOR?

Looks like F22 has been switching on his Rybka or Houdini for a few hours to show us how he can produce nice analysis lol

F22 has been brusque on previous occasions, but this time there seems little wrong.
One side offers moves and analysis, the other offers mere opinions. Hand waving.
He turns on his PC to help with analysis. Of course. This is standard practice. It is not an insult.

One can probably play the Polugaevsky regularly below the 2400 level since most 6. Bg5 players are not expecting it. I barely studied it when I played 1. e4 since no one ever played it against me, nor did I think anyone would want to. But if you get a 2300+ who knows you play the Polugaevsky, and the day before spends two hours preparing with a database and computer programme, eventually you will have to change your line against 6. Bg5.

Here is one of the lines I have after 17. c4:

15. ... Qc7 16. Qe3 Bb7 17. c4 bxc4 18. Kh1 Bxe4 19. fxg7 Bxg7 20. Qxe4 Qb7 21. Qg4 O-O 22. Ng5 Rd4 23. Qh3 h6 24. Nxf7 Rxf7 25. Qxe6 Rd2 26. Rac1 Rxe2 27. Qxe2 Rxf1+ 28. Qxf1 c3 29. bxc3

* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
*

Now where did Black go wrong? My answer is: 7. ... b5?.
