The move you suggest, 29.g4!, looks like a very strong improvement. White prevents ...Bh6, and it is very hard to suggest a good continuation for Black. 29...Kd8 looks like the only logical move, but then 30.Rxf7 c2 31.Bc1 and Black is struggling. I find it hard to suggest an improvement over the computer's recommended continuation: 31...Bd6 32.h3 Re8 33.g5 Re1 34.Bd2

Black has no time to queen the c-pawn as White's g-pawn is running. 34...Ke8 35.Ra7 b3 Sacrificing the b-pawn in order to queen the c-pawn. Otherwise White simply goes on advancing his pawns and king. 36.Rb7 b2 37.Rxb2 c1=Q 38.Bxc1 Rxc1 39.g6 and White should be winning.

The opening line in question is not terribly critical (Botvinnik Variation with 16.Na4 Qa6 17.a3 Bxd5 and now 18.axb4 instead of 18.Bxd5).

I'm curious about the consequences of the game continuation 22.Nb6+ Qxb6 23.Rxd8+ Qxd8 24.Qxe5 Qd5+ 25.Qxd5 exd5 26.Rxa7 d4 27.Bf4 c3, reaching the following typical Botvinnik ending:

Here Nikolic played 28.Rc7+, allowing Timman to draw without many problems.  Instead, Lutz gives 28.bxc3 dxc3 29.Rxf7, which the engine also likes.  Nevertheless, the line 29...Bh6! 30.Bd6(Lutz stops here) 30...Rd8! 31.Rc7+ Kb8 32.Rd7+ Kc8 33.Rxd8+ Kxd8 34.Bxb4 c2 25.Ba3 c1Q 26.Bxc1 Bxc1 is a pretty certain draw:
