So, what are the odds that Aronian opens 1.e4 in game 4 against Kramnik??

That depends on whether a mirror shatters before the game.

Well, in the past there was no internet and fast info spreading all over the world. Now it's different. For example, one can bet in Malaysia for a soccer match in Columbia. Hence, the problems!..  Wink

How to do that? When there's no real football/soccer anymore..as well as other sports, too.. And I want chess to be real!..

Sorry, I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Feel free to open a new thread to discuss whatever reality in sport & chess that you're arguing for or against.
Well, my opinion is that betting on chess can ruin our game in the near future. Just as well as soccer was ruined.. (And sorry, but I don't want to start a new thread just to tell that many soccer encounters are pre-arranged.. And it is a well-known fact!)
Anyway, look what I've found: http://www.bet-at-home.com/start.aspx
Edit: The same goes in Russia - http://www.baltbet.com/News.aspx?lang=EN
Chess has probably involved betting ever since it was invented, or at least from the time of Greco. Besides, even without betting most tournaments have money prizes and surely corrupt players would also buy games to ensure: prize money, GM/IM norms, qualification to zonals etc etc.
So, why do you still continue playing chess at all?

Hmm, 1,25 on Anand seems a bit low but 3,60 on Gelfand might be worth the gamble - especially if we can assume that somebody pays Anand to take a dive! :))

Anyway, a clubmate of mine will be in Vegas in May - so I'm sure he will find out if you can bet on the individual games of the match.

Yep, now that you mentioned it I also remember that betsson offered it, I'm not much of a gambler either so I don't know if they still have chess on the menu - though for top events like WCh, Wijk & London it's plausible.

Anyway, judging from the lack of replies it seems the Danish federation managed a real feat - hopefully it's the start of a new trend, at least around here Chess certainly needs a shot in the arm, moneywise or else it may soon be overrun by everything from Monopoly to WoW.

I'm not on ICC, but a bettingbot might be fun I suppose, though without real bets I doubt it would catch on. About a decade ago, one club here offered an online free competition where you could choose 8 players in the highest series with a combined rating of all not more than 20.000 (or something like that). The winner was the one with the best scoring team. Iirc, they even had a few bookprizes from a sponsor. - Alas, as with most things done just for fun, it faded and disappeared after 2-3 years.

I seem to recall a couple of years ago The Week in Chess had ads for Betsson.com where you could bet on chess. I don't gamble, so no idea if they still collect bets on chess.

ICC has a bettingbot that allows people to bet on just about anything.

Of course, that's just for entertainment purposes and no money changes hands.

Well, I really doubt that chessplayers would be more morally corrupt than say footballplayers, or that betting on chess would have anything to do with 'solving' chess. (On Fb a GM-friend recently complained about a new Najdorf dvd with 700 000 engine games - I have no idea how useful that would be, but surely the scientific method is much more likely to 'solve' chess than a wager on who beats who...)

Anyway, if we could skip the negativity and actually answer my original question: is it possible to gamble on chess games anywhere else in the world? Las Vegas perhaps?

Starting to bet on chess is the fastest way to "solve chess".  Angry

if players could win more money by placing bets again themselves than their expected share of tournament prizes (not to mention any offers they may receive), that would certainly challenge their morality, if need be.
Another funny aspect is that gamblers will have more information than the players. Imagine a "live bet" module coupled with Fritz16 on chessbet.com (formerly known as chessbase)...

sounds like a double-edged way for a chess federation  to increase income. Considering that a significant proportion of chess pros play poker for a living, what can you expect with bets placed on their heads ? not everybody wants chess to sink into a gambling vehicle.

Well, the problem with fixed games is always there. In the Italian football league there seems to be a new inquiry every year, especially in the B and C series.

On the other hand, it could create new job opportunities for chess players: setting odds, commenting on them in the papers and on the web etc, and when enough people gamble on something it will increase the demand for live coverage and commentary...
