I've only browsed  HTRYC 4, but it looks very good, if excessively wordy.  I think HTRYC 3 was an excellent book (read it at around 1500).  You could probably read both editions, since it looks like 4 is almost completely rewritten with new material.  

Also, the first half of My System shouldn't be overlooked.

I'm not sure it matters which way round you read them but they are both highly recommended. I read Simple Chess soon after I stopped dropping pieces and it opened my eyes to what the game was about.

Which of these would you read first
  HTRYC 4th edition or Simple Chess by Stean? Which would be easier? I need to continue with tactics but would like to understand positional chess. Is Silman's a difficult book and would it teach me what I need to understand positional chess?  Thanks, Sagwa    Undecided
