This was a great match, with some fun chess.

The drawn result was just about right. I'm glad to see how well Kramnik fought back to draw, and almost win the match. I get the feeling that if it had been a twelve-game match,  Kramnik would have won. But then, if this had been a Candidates' Final, or a title match, perhaps we would have seen different choices made throughout the match.

Still, it was very entertaining. I can only hope the Anand-Gelfand match will be as entertaining. Though I wouldn't mind if Anand won a 4-1 blow-out, draws not included.

Another 1.e4 game. What do the players see in this rare sideline?

According to Dennis Monokroussos White's opening choice is perfect for those who think the London too risky.

Well it avoids both the Marshall, the Petrov and of course the semi-slav...

The 2nd Fischer-Spassky match had something similar, but instead of a speed game the penalty was to play the next match game immediately.

When I read the rules I was very surprised. Don't remember having seen such a rule in a match before. And the rule was indirectly playing a role already in game 2 where the players could easily have agreed on a draw inside the 3 hours. But they chose to play on until they had passed 3 hours of play...

Truly a nice move by the organizers.

Anyone else noticed the pragmatic genius of the organisers? :)

If a game ends a draw before 3 hours of play, they will have to play an extra speed game - so of course all early draws will end at just over 3 hours play, as neither players wants to work an extra half hour for free...

It's so much simpler than the Sofia rules and such. And maybe we'll get to see one speed game - after the final game if Kramnik has equalised the score before that.

14.Re3 was disappointing, regardless of chessbase giving it praise (it only makes sense in response to ...Bg4). 14...b5 just equalized on the spot. 14.h3 b5 also works.

I get the feeling Kramnik was somewhat thrown off by black's 13...Rd8, not knowing what useful 14th move to play, and he went ahead with Re3 (thematic for the variation, but again, usually just in response to ...Bg4). This would explain the time usage gap that developed.

Ummm....

That's not what Kramnik was punished for.

Still, a great result by Aronian, congratulations.

I'm still rooting for Kramnik.

Btw, I closed the poll too late. Several people voted after the result of the first game was already in.

Our good friend LDZ must be ecstatic. White plays a quiet, solid move (6.Bxf6) instead of a sharp, tactical one (6.Bh4) and gets punished for it. Good game of Aronian.

I've been looking forward to this match ever since they announced it, glad to see it's off to an exciting start.
