2-2 looked a bit cheap, looked like our goalie stumbled on himself or something.
Still, they played better than in game 1 but not good enough - the attacks never really worked, symptomatic that a defender scored both our goals...

Plan B activated: go Denmark!

Did anyone bother to explain Isaksson the difference between keeping and dodgeball? Wink

I am already at plan D after Ireland amd the Swedes. Any suggestions?  Grin

England look night-and-day better than they did against France today. It was an evenly fought contest, but England seemed to have slightly more creative midfielders. Ok, so England wasn't exactly Spain, or even France, but they did look better than the Swedish midfield. Isaksson kept the score from being 5-2, but Sweden still looked extremely dangerous going forward.

What an exciting game!

The Swedish team will be visiting the orphanage on their way home...

Meanwhile, the French team looked to be the class of Group D with a very impressive 2-0 win over Ukraine.

Still in the early opening phase..   :D[/quote]

They've made more than 10 "moves".  It's no longer the early opening phase! This is good news!

2) there's only been one penalty shot awarded - and Greece missed it.

I hope this won't jinx today's games though. :)

The remaining games of Ukraine (vs France & England) will be interesting and definitively "three-results". France is slowly rebuilding a decent team with a good attacking line (Ribery-Benzema-Nasri, + Giroud, Ben Arfa), but they crucially lack good central defense. England will get back some of their best players. Ukraine has home advantage plus great Voronin & resurrected Chevtchenko. All very unclear!

Yeah Irish supporters are the best. In 1994 I was on holiday in Greece during Holland vs Ireland. In the street there was an Irish pub and a "orange" bar. After the game (win for Holland) there was a huge party in front of the Irish pub. Quite a weird experience to party with supporters that you just beat.

One thing everyone seems to have ignored is that the second goal Germany scored against the Dutch was very soft. The goalie went down before the shot was fired.

In the first 23 minutes of the game, the Dutch looked the better side. After the goal was scored, the Dutch looked impotent despite their better control of the game.

Holland didn't just have defensive problems, they didn't have Neuer in net. The Germans were clinical in their finishing, both in front of net and at the end of the game. The Dutch need to figure out how to score, and they need a world-class goalkeeper.

In the Spain-Ireland game, Casillas only had to make about two stops, but they were both excellent. Spain won 4-0. If the Dutch had a great goalie, they wouldn't be complaining so much about their defensive lapses.

Disagree slightly I dont think he could have saved that one (the Denmark goal is another story), it was really the defenders. If you play in central defense, you should follow the striker everywhere. When he goes to the bathroom you go to the bathroom. With both goals both central defenders were at least 10 yards away from Gomez. Cassillas would not have stopped those either, when you got Laurel and Hardy defending Gomez. Those are errors that would have gotten me benched when I used to play.

Simply put, with the exception of Sneyder, Stekelenburg and maybe De Jong all played way beyond par. They all looked tired and lacked inspiration (again with the exception of Sneyder, did you see his argument with the coach?). And then bringing Huntelaar and vd Vaart when the disaster is already there, doesnt make much differenence anymore. It is all the more disappointing since we have a couple of players who prolly would have played better. For defense we still have Vlaar, Bouhlarouz and Emanuelson (why he isnt selected is beyond me), for midfield we have got a huge line up of replacements for Van Bommel (ranging from De Zeeuw to Van der Vaart) and for wingers we have Narsingh (watch that guy), John, Kuyt and some others.

Anyway I think the tournament is over. This team wont beat the Portuguese, let alone with 2 goals difference. The only way for us to get that done is if we threaten to stop paying for the Euro "or else" Wink

In general I think that with some exceptions the players arent really on top of their game yet. I have seen players like Arshavin, Ronaldo, Cech etc perform much better during the season.
