iirc wasn't it in a previous tournament that Sweden & Denmark drew with 2-2 and Italy was out from next round? So it's just bad memories I suppose..  Wink

True. And iirc, a lot of Italians were screaming "prearranged" both before and after the match, which was just ridiculous. It was a perfectly normal match, in which Sweden scored the 2-2 goal in the 88th minute or so. Of course, none of the teams wanted to attack after that - who can blame them for that?

I see no reason to expect a prearranged 2-2 between Spain and Croatia, but if the score happens to be 2-2 by "normal" means, they probably won't try to alter that result. I do feel bad for Italy if that happens again...

True. Still, Denmark were impressively close to advance from an extremely hard group. When Bendtner was held in the shirt on 1-1, it looked like a penalty kick to me, and one can only wonder what would have happened if Germany had been down 1-2.

Please be more specific. What was the large amount of luck with regards to the NL? I do not think that if a team loses all three of its group games that this has anything to do with good luck or bad luck. GER outplayed NL and NL essentially stopped playing and kicked it back a notch after they scored against POR. The NL played way to lethargic against POR and looking at all the counters and changes of POR they deservedly won.

[quote author=34010C2A050308090E600 link=1336403980/129#129 date=1339961939] I believe they deserved a draw tonight at least (and more points from their other matches).

Can't agree with that. In the GER-NL game, Germany had the qualitatively and quantitavely better chances and I would rather call the NL lucky for not going down with 4 or more goals (remember the header from Badstuder and the free kick from Schweinsteiger in the first half, or Hummels solo or Klose almost getting the ball from the NL goalie to name a few?).

I do see your your point with the NL-DEN game. That was tragic.

In summary, in my opinion, in two games (against POR and GER) the NL were the weaker team, but probably should have won against DEN.

It will be interesting to see what will happen next with the Elftal. I would imagine that van Marwijk will have to go and probably that van Bommel's international career is over as well. But otherwise I wonder what else will happen. The main players aren't getting younger.

Sneijder is currently 28, Robben 28, van der Vaart 29,  Huntelaar 28, van Persie 28, de Jong 27.

What do you guys think? Will this cast of "characters" try again in 2014 in Brazil?

Plan C activated - cheering for Malmö FF's old gold trainer Roy Hodgson.

The Danes would've needed Rommedal to get anywhere - the big teams just have too many good replacements on the bench while smaller countries feel every injury.

I agree, Holland really looked like they were going to do it for a while and then Ronaldo...  Sad

It'll be interesting to see how well Germany and Portugal do now, my bet is that they will go really far and perhaps to the final. With Nani and Ronaldo on form Portugal will be very tough to beat.

I feel bad for Holland going out of the tournament like this, they were up against three very tough teams... it's not like the world cup where at least one team is usually easy. As time moved on they employed the correct strategy of throwing as many people forward as possible, but unfortunately this gave Portugal the advantage in terms of winning the game. I believe they deserved a draw tonight at least (and more points from their other matches). Unfortunately there's a large amount of luck involved in the big tournaments, but yes, obviously the Dutch team have fallen from the giants that they were (undefeated in their past 41 games before their tournament), and it will be depressing for them.

C. Ronaldo was the best player today in both matches.

1-1 Portugal-Netherlands so far, it appears that this game will have both sides with an advancing strategy.

Netherlands will play with Robben, Sneider, Van Der Vart, Huntelar and Van Persie...wow! All in attack. This game will be impressive because Netherlands could win 5-0 or if Portugal hit the counter-attack then could score a lot of goals against a defence that is not there. I only hope that this will not end up in a battle like eight years ago.  Smiley

I don't recall a single Euro or WC where NO team has been guaranteed a spot in the next round after 2 games of Round Robin play before. Is this a first?

I can be mistaken, but I dont know of any scenario in which the Frenchies are out.

It's fantasy of course, but if Sweden beats France 2-0 and Ukraine beats England 1-0, wouldn't England's 4-4 beat France's 3-3 on more goals scored?

I thought that in that case the result against the lowest is cleared, since Sweden is lowest France gets a loss removed.

Russia also went out despite a better goal difference than the Greeks.

But the Greeks beat Russia Smiley

  1. internal result
  2. internal goal difference

  3. most goals made internaly
(if more than two teams tied)
  4. goal difference (total)
  5. most goals made (total)

Imagine if in football they brought in a rule where the teams could agree to a draw early...

They would line up, kick-off, pass it around the back for a while and suddenly the captain of one side would put out his hand for a draw, the other would accept and they would all go home. And a win is only worth twice as much as a draw again. I wonder how long it would remain the world's most popular game.

Or even better, in for example Spain - Ireland, after 20 minutes Ireland scores with a beautiful header, the Spaniards offer a draw and everybody goes home... Smiley

Denmark against Germany is a 50% match.

Not 15 goals?
