Suicide by Gelfand, who celebrated too much, due to his first win over Anand since 1993.

The older, the better - over 2200 and still rising.

Then Kasparov bashed out the Dragon and turned the tide of the battle and won.

But that loss for Anand was a blunder, which really wasn't opening specific. A pure miscalculation in a pretty even position, right?

Interesting quote below by Shipkov (in live commentary):

" It seems my tentative suggestions in the introduction to this game turned out to be correct - Gelfand simply couldn't mentally adapt to the role of being ahead in the match. The proximity of the desired summit sometimes puts much more pressure on a person than seeing it grow more distant."

re Kasparov-Anand, the most important game was when Kasparov immediately rebounded after losing a game, with a Open RL novelty. Another key game was the Scandinavian one (which was a nice surprise by Anand who got the better position out of the opening, but in the end lost).

in this game Gelfand just blundered tactically, Anand didn't have to do anything ...
in the game before Anand was outplayed ...

Wow!

This really is beginning to feel a bit like the Anand-Kasparov match with Anand playing the role of Kasparov.

The main difference is that Anand won by playing a dangerous opening, the Sicilian Dragon, then fell apart. Gelfand won because Anand went berserk by pushing his king-side pawns in a slightly inferior position.

Kudos to Anand for evening the score so quickly!

What a boring match. It's even after 8 games, and the last one only lasted 17 moves!

I have a book about the Anand-Kasparov match and in that match Anand was leading.
Then Kasparov bashed out the Dragon and turned the tide of the battle and won.

-------------
Anand has also played the Dragon a few times, one example is Polgar-Anand.

Wasn't it Kasparov playing the dragon?

Hi all

Well a 17 mover! At last the match and Anand has woken up!!

Lets hope that both players now go for throat and ditch this safety first stuff. I then woke up!!

Well if Gelfand wins the match good luck to him. As the current champion Anand really must up the anti and show why he is the World Champion. As has previously been said Anand has not played well for some years let's see if he can roll back the years in the next few games.

A quick scan over my database shows that both players have only very limited experience with loosing very short games:

(+ some quick defeats in blitz and rapid games).

I hope that Anands win does not leed to back to the same hyper solid games by both sides.

If Gelfands wins this match I buy a book with hes best games.
I alreay got the Anands best games in the edition he wrote when he won FIDE Championship for the first time.

It should perhaps be noted that even Peter Leko didn't see the trap even up to when gxh5 was played, and don't think his ability can be disputed - it is easy to calculate once you see the idea, but that is the difficult part. Anand just said that he saw this possible trap when he played 11.exf5(!!)

Interesting that Gelfand seems more relaxed and at ease in this press conference than any of the others so far!  Whereas Anand yesterday was clearly not happy to be there.
