Cool idea!  It definitely looks like g4 wins after ...Re7.

But is ...Re7 really Black's only move.  I might be missing something, but I think ...Ne4 is possible.

I agree the game today was very interesting, but make no apologies for saying most of the first six games were boring - they were! The worst one was the Sveshnikov which looked like it could be interesting and then came c4, Bxd5, cxd5...absolutely the least interesting continuations possible.

I looked at a nice line where White can win by forcing zugzwang - imagine White puts his Queen on e5 eventually with the Black rook on d7 , king on g6, Knight on f6 - Blacks only move is ...Re7 and then g4!! crashes through.... Easier said than done maybe, but it shows the potential. This position might be very tricky for Anand to hold. It might even be a win.

Agreed.  The draw that looks likely at this point doesn't change the fact that it was a good fight.

The "this is boring" brigade can't complain about the game today anyhow - its a good old battle.

I am new to this line (studied it as Black) and was also a bit surprised. At the time played I was trying to figure out whether any plans involving ...h6 and moving the Nf6 were possible (Karpov has played Ng4 in a game in which he has omitted Rc8: Van Wely-Karpov 1998). I follow Shipov's comments and he gave 15. ... h6 16. Bh4 Nh5! which looks nice to me.

This makes sense.
Probably he was thinking in terms of 16...e5 being answered by 17.d5 but then saw that 17.Bf5 (as Naiditsch suggests) is very unpleasant.

Yes surely he must have intended to follow up with ...e5 and then realised it didn't work, so it was kind of a mini-blunder really, positionally anyway.

I play this Nimzo line (Karpov variation) with black and while it is thematical in some lines to capture at f3, but only if black can follow up with e5 break and Anand noticed to late that it does not work here. I think the game could have gone either way after either h6 or Rfe8 instead. Still interesting to see if Anand can hold hes position.

Indeed, you were right. No Slav, Nimzo today...

Update: I dont fancy Anands 14...Bxf3 move at all. Today so far looks very promising for Gelfand - he has blitzed out his moves and has a big advantage on the Clock, while Anand used up 45 mins it looks like just to get a dodgy position where White has the two bishops against Black's two Knights.

From Naiditsch on Chessdom "2 things are clear. Anand is not in his preparation and Gelfand is doing better here"

Agree. ...Bf3 and ...Re8 just looked...ugly.

Still, did smell.

Ending where Gelfand has a Q vs. Anand's R+N+P.  Maybe Anand can hold on here, but it looks like it's going to be difficult.

Gelfand's opening choice was a bit bizarre. To me, once he played bf6 he had a strategically difficult position and as he used to play the KID he would know that. It looked like a computer line with activity but he just didn't know what to do !! Not the worst blunder ever - remember Karpov at Seville blundering the exchange to a one mover !

Still all to play for - Gelfand and Anand may well switch lines -

Incidentally that line with the b7-knight (which was played by such as Lasker and Tarrasch) is "defended" by GM Viktor Erdos in the latest Informant.
