Gelfand really came back fighting after that terrible loss in game 8. Kudos to him, and to Anand for defending a position that many GMs were saying was very close to lost.

But to be fair, there were just as many GMs who weren't sure, or thought Black would be able to hold even before move 40.

It was a fascinating game!

Neither Svidler nor Naiditsch initially liked Anand's 42...Re7 thinking 43.g4 was possibly winning,  but Anand saw everything correctly.  It's officially a draw now.

Have to admit though, I'm struggling to see how Naiditsch is so enthusiastic. I cannot see how White breaks through the fortress unless he can force an incredibly subtle zugzwang position somehow. Still as I said its a different story sitting there with the clock ticking.

Update: now he backtracks and says its a draw, and sure enough Draw agreed. Good game, Anand will be glad to see the back of it.

I didn't say defending is easy. On the contrary, this is why I gave credit to Anand for his defence..

Good point about h5-pawn, and I'd be surprised if Anand didn't hold.

Don't see 'plenty left' now. It is not possible to grab the h5-pawn due to the Rd7-Rd8-Rh8 threat. Anand defends nicely..

Following Svidler's commentary at the official site, it sounds like White can still create some problems.  Maybe nothing definitive, but there definitely seems to be a bit of play left in the position.

Keano, you seem very keen to talk this match up and denigrate the boo squad...can't we just leave it at 'de gustibus etc'?

It almost seems that some people feel the great chain starting with Steinitz is under threat, and they have to talk the match up to try to keep interest in the format?

I thought then g4 but now I see its only a draw, so maybe Black is holding OK, but still plenty of play left in it - might as well make Anand suffer.
