Gelfand definitely has had the better of the positions in the last half of the match so far, even though he horribly botched game 8.

It seems that Anand is stymied. If the match were 24 games long, we probably would have seen more probing of Gelfand's Grunfeld. I'm not entirely convinced we'd see a markedly different final result than we will see in the 12 game match. The two players are closely matched and the winner will be the one who displays better nerves at the end.

Game Drawn. So its come down to the last 2 games. I'll be away on holidays for that so good luck to both of them, and lets hope it doesnt go to the dreaded rapid tie-break.

Comment of A.Naiditsch:
"Anand is playing 3.Bb5, the main reply today is 3...Nf6, but of course 3...e6 is a well known move."

Really? 3...Nf6 the main reply today? This would mean that Sveshnikov players should not have any problems dealing with 3.Nc3. Is Naiditsch off or have I missed the recent developments in the Rossolimo?

Likely he just needed to say something.

The presenter's syllogism:

I need to say something.
This is something.
I will say this.

...g6, ....d6, ...e6, ...Nf6 all appear at high levels.

Sounds like a strange comment to me, would've thought 3...g6 was still the main move.

Naiditsch seems to think White is better in this endgame because of the structural advantage while Svidler prefers Blacks bishops and doesn't like the White king position. So dynamic equality could be a reasonable assessment. Have to admit if I had this position as Black I'd be worried.

Bb5 Sicilian today! Svidler seems to think Black has no problems and might even be better.

So in this case, if White tries to win, as the spectators want, then White might risk losing badly in a drawn position? So maybe that signifies that both players should not play overaggressively and better to play and draw than try to win and lose badly?

a friend of mine came up with the idea of 43.Qb3, intending 44.Qg3. It would follow 43...Rd7 44.Qg3 Kh7, and now 45.Qg5?? would be a loosing plunder due to 45...Ne4 (only move) 46.Qxh5 Kg7, and White has no defence against Rd7-d8-h8 -+. Obviously Gelfand has learned his lesson!

It seems as if Anand is trying different lines against the Grünfeld, which indicates that perhaps Gelfand's Grünfeld preparation is very strong? So if Gelfand continues to play the Grünfeld, perhaps he must play the sharper lines or at least lesser known, such as 10...b6 against 7. Bc4, 9...b6 against 7. Nf3, etc. If Anand plays 3. f3, then I think Gelfand must play 3...e5. Fianchetto must be responded with the 4...d5/5...Nxd5 line.

The "this is boring" brigade can't complain about the game today anyhow - its a good old battle.

Yes, today's draw is a great game; especially at the point where Gelfand realized he could force the unbalanced exchanges, and again with the very well constructed end fortress by Anand.

If most draws were this tense - edgy - imbalanced - exciting, there would be fewer draws, because half of these cliff-hangers would tip to the decisive side.

Anand's ending fortress is powerful, elegant, and instructive. His position is a textbook example showing the downside of trying to fight two weaker officers with a lone expensive queen.

He lost playing the Benoni though, he might try for the Grünfeld again since Anand seems to prefer to play not the critical lines.

I suspect another Benoni set up.

But of course, he may still test his luck with the Grunfeld again.

I real world championship level game !  Anand should feel pretty good at holding that- and should feel confident tomorrow. Gelfand will surely switch openings but to what !?!

Hi All

Great game today. Gelfand put Anand under tremendous pressure but he survived. In my opinion Anand is the better player but he needs to get motivated. Let's see what he has tomorrow. I suspect Gelfand might want to move away from the Grunfeld.
