I am afraid that should Gelfand win the rapid/blitz play off who will recognise him as a true champion?

Perhaps we should just dump the World Champion tag and just have a number one playr based on the rating list. Magnus Carlsen is the no 1. Perhaps he should simply play a match with Levon Aronian. Surely it would not be so tedious as this one!

You are contradicting yourself. First, you opine that we should have no official champion. Then you opine that the world #1 and #2 should play for the title.

The system isn't perfect, but it is the system until a different one is put in place. And whoever wins will be the official world champion.

Hi All

How can a Classical World Championship be decided by Rapid play or Blitz? Has Chess really descended to the ranks of football where a penalty shoot-out decides the winner!

No there is something wrong with the fabric of this match. The onus must be put on the challenger to defeat the incumbant champion in order to dethrone him.

Yes, I think they are good as tie-breaks....

(An idea) Maybe in future, they shouldn't increase the number of classic games, but should include the rapid and blitz in the normal flow. Let's say 2 classic games, then 1 day with rapid and blitz (that would count as tiebreakers in case the result in the classic would be equal), then again 2 classic games, followed once again by a day with rapid and blitz.

Additionally, that would make the "last" game in the classic match an all-in like that unfortunately armageddon blitz....however without the possible sour byeffect that one of the players lose on time....

That argument seems to come up almost every WC-match...

Maybe Fide should just scrap the whole qualification and just set one date, and the 1 & 2 of the Elolist at that point will then have qualified for the WC-match.

Many short draws, so a coin flip would suit to this match perfectly.

The older, the better - over 2200 and still rising.

By whom, Z-zug?

The two players are the only two who have legitimately run the gauntlet of candidates and World championship matches.

I will consider the winner of the match to be legitimate.

I don't disagree with that. What I mean is that the winner will not be considered as the World Champion in a way Kasparov or Kramnik were considered (and much of that time, there were sort of two WCs!), but rather as an "interim" champion, with everybody waiting for the next "real" champion.

Addendum: Maybe that was partly true already before the match due to the players' age, but the sort of games played will reinforce that feeling.

I will consider the winner of the match to be legitimate.  I will also look forward to the next cycle.

But that hasn't changed since 1972 for me.

They are NOT perfect, but they are vastly preferable to a coin-toss or a spin of a roulette wheel.

Is rapid and blitz really worse than extra time and penalties in football?

Kramnik just sitting there saying the first thing that comes into his head though. Its a drawn position and there are also some chances for White to go wrong so draw is fair enough I think. Gelfand responded very well to the challenge today.

Hi All

Kramnik astonished that Anand offered Gelfand a draw without making him work for it!

I am sorry but does this not sum up the whole match. I am now starting to route for Gelfand.

What would Gary Kasparov have to say about ths I wonder?

Nice positional pawn sac and even more nice was the way Gelfand chose to defend!

Indeed. Kramnik says he'd prefer to be Black now!

Yes! And also the "no draw offers" idea, as long as you can draw by repeating moves.

So, it seems that Kramnik is a regular visitor at the forum :) - or have these two ideas been discussed elsewhere on the net?
