In the classical games Gelfand was better imho.
Also the win by Gelfand is much more earned than the win from Anand which was more due to a blunder.
In rapid chess Gelfand was not moving fast enough and lost, therefore the rapid chess was an earned win for Vishy.
In the classical chess, the only true chess for a world championship, Gelfand was better.

I'm amazed how Anand went through this match!
Maybe he was the only one in the whole world that never underestimated Gelfand. Not even for a minute. ..And this...while all spoke how Gelfand was not so good to take the chess crown from Anand! Amazing!..
Anand almost never smiled.. I never saw him so serious. He went for 'rapid' fluently, intentionally...knowing he was definitely better at the time management. And this was the only Gelfand's weakness, for sure. And the only one that Anand was sure of.
While Gelfand had it all - better opening preparation (two new openings with black - one for 1.d4 and another for 1.e4), perfect concentration, tactical abilities, great experience in winning matches (all the candidates) and strong motivation for winning this match..
Meanwhile, Anand's seconds made their job, too.. Only once, but still enough.. They prepared Vishy in the opening for his only win in the 'rapid' - the win that won the title!
Btw, may I say that I'm not a special Vishy fan?!  Cool

Hi All

Congrats. to Anand who probably showed that he was a bit better than Gelfand although he was off form from what I and other GM's thought. However, I feel somewhat sorry for Gelfand who was very well motivated and it would appear better prepared than Anand.

On this showing it appears only to be a matter of time before Aronian or Carlson defeats him.

In any case it would surely be surprising for someone who is 43 years old to hold on to the title for much longer.

Well, he's a vegetarian I've heard so we should deduct 10 years from his age.

In the match it seemed to me that Gelfand was actually playing the better chess, but once the clock ticked down he started to make strange decisions. He must in fact be an incredibly strong player if he after all these years at the top still hasn't been forced to learn to handle his clock better than that...

The tie-break wasn't the highest quality of chess, but it was exciting.

Both sides took risks and either player could have won.

I've already seen the narrative on a couple of sites that Gelfand lost because he got into time trouble. Gelfand got in to time trouble because his opponent played extremely sharp, complicated chess. Gelfand also gets credit for playing very interesting chess, especially in game three of the tie-break.

Congratulations to Anand! Very few world champions have successfully defended their title THREE times in a row!

I was pretty close, voted for Anand by 1, which it was, but in the tie-breaks...

I rooted for Gelfand, since he is a FC Barcelona fan, even a club member!

Maybe a snooker or tennis format could be the way in the future? Many rapids would be more telling than 12-14 long games.

Fischer-Tal,

Per your point, I think the hand ringing about the "boringness" of this world championship is taking place entirely among chess players. To the outside world, chess remains an equal parts fascinating and yet inaccessible contest. And the content of the game is largely irrelevant to them. Whether there are dashing combinational finishes, intricate positional struggles or dull grandmaster draws has no bearing. Let's be real, the only thing that would make a difference to the outside world is the presence or absence of larger than life, controversial or charismatic personalities or insular interests as in the case of interest in Anand on the sub-continent.

And while we hate the idea of a rapid play tie-break, it probably actually adds to the intrigue of the whole contest to the casual observer, as will the prospect of an Armageddon finish. It is clear that the interest of the ardent chess fan and the outside world are not aligned. And this illustrates the absurdity of continually making changes to chess to make it more exciting and popular with John Public

This morning on BBC main news they mention that today the world chess championship will be decided by quick games, or even possibly an Armageddon game.

this show show the World chess championship is still a valuable brand for chess, to the media I think it could still be put as one of the new rising countries India in struggle with some one trained in the old soviet system.

However boring one calls the short draws it is clear the world championship match has a pull , just look at the number of posts on it.

I feel that both Anand and Gelfand have interests in drawing, Anand to get the game to speed chess, Gelfand to shorten the match to have the best chance of an upset.

I have watched Anand,s DVd have been reading Gelfand,s book of memorable games and it sheds a lot of light on his style and approach and made the match more interesting
