Has the drawrate really made such a huge leap forward since the 50ies? I faintly remember reading a chessbase article that argued the opposite.

In 960 choosing one set-up a year would just cause a lot of computer generated theory to emerge ...

By implication you are also asserting that today's advances in so-called "opening" theory are merely "computer generated".

Try running Rybka without any opening book, to generate opening theory from move 1, for the traditional start position setup. The trees Rybka produces are be inferior to what humans have made.

The opening theory for a second reused start position setup from chess960-FRC would have to be generated by humans (aided by tools).
And this time we could all participate; especially through ChessBase's new "Lets Check" feature.

We would need a clearer convention for Naming new openings tho.

In 960 choosing one set-up a year would [lose] all connections to mankind and history.

That is the "glass is half empty" perspective. But for a moment let us consider the "glass is half full" perspective.

The amount of interesting opening theory contained in the best non-traditional setup from chess960-FRC is probably greater than the amount that humanity has researched and discovered in the traditional setup.

Unfortunately the not-yet-researched opening theory remains hidden from us until a consensus against the enormous draw rate in elite chess reaches critical mass and someone decides to fund a serious tournament with the second setup reused.

I prefer chess to checkers. ... Chess isn't dead.
Faint praise for chess.

The draw rate in elite chess is too high for its own good, and for our good as sporting spectators.

Artificial fixes like the Sofia rule, or Bilbao scoring 3-1-0, or making a Statemate a win or a half-win, or Armageddon chess, or Speed chess or other clock-based schemes, are not the solution.

Discard the "Random" from Fischer Random Chess!
