I admit this was an older thread.  But we were accepted to the ICC download page http://www.chessclub.com/index.php/download-software/java/

When accepted i didn't update this post at the time.  I got to admit i was put off by the tone of this thread Smiley But it's time to clean up.  Sorry for the delay.

thank you,

I emailed icc as i said i would. Ruy Mora, COO of ICC responded and gave permission to tell anyone: (he is )  someone who likes and has used Lantern and looks forward to having it on our download page sooner or later.

Why should i be unhappy with that? email ICC@chessclub.com if any questions.

And there is nothing commercial. I havent made a dime. I started this as a learning project to train myself in java, a language i don't use at work.  This is a completely free program, and its open source.  Anyone can take the program and modify it if they abide by GPL and make their code open source. To get at the code just take the jar that you run, rename the extension from .jar to .zip. and unzip. full source code is there and it's free to use. the body of the program is in the lantern folder.  sort by type and look for the .java files.

OK, I wish every success to the authors of Lantern Chess, but we don't allow commercial promotions on this board.

He claims above, in his first post, that GM Kosten granted permission.

ICC does not advertise Lantern currently (and we are pretty new, started 2.5 years ago and its only been in the last year that its gotten up to speed as full featured) but the ICC acknowledges lantern and is not hostile to it.  I've had ICC forward me a user bug/feature request, the follow broadcast menu item that i added to actions menu came from a user request forwarded to me by ICC.  Email ICC@chessclub.com if you have a question. I will forward that i said as much to ICC.

This is probably a scam, ICC would announce on the home pg or by email if there was a new interface. There is no announcement, and I have received no email about it.

worldchesslinks.net a comprehensive chess software site has reviewed five mac interfaces including lantern and given lantern chess 5 stars, the highest review of any mac interface on it's site http://www.worldchesslinks.net/e0003.html If your still not sure who I am or what lantern chess is, I did a video response to this 5 star review last Christmas www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQnJfLt9mMg

Also Dan Heisman of ChessFm has been refering new students seeking lessons on a mac to lantern chess

from his lessons page: http://home.comcast.net/~danheisman/Lessons/chess_lesson.htm

"NOTE: For your first on-line lesson you do not have to be an ICC member; get a free trial membership, download "Blitzin" for PCs or "Lantern" for Macs, and log on at www.chessclub.com and I will call and help. "

I think he likes the circles and arrows support.  I have worked with Dan a bit to get some features in to lantern that his students seem to want like Dan motivated me to put flip on the game menu of lantern as the command flip had been hard for some students to grasp.

Also if you have a copy of Blitzin 2.5 or greater and go to help menu then the about menu item, a dialog appears, gives credits for blitzin.  I briefly worked on blitzin 2.5 for a few months in 2004 while i was in school, and you will see that Mike Adams is listed in the blitzin 2.5 version or greater help about dialog.

All you got to do is download it and run it, dont even need to connect to see it's not a scam. There is no announcement yet by ICC because ICC did not make this interface, it's a private project.  I have been talking to ICC to get Lantern on the ICC download page, and they seem inclined to do that perhaps this year but its a not yet.  They have some other things that they are doing internally with their operations which i won't go into that they want to see done first.  Doesn't relate to me what they're doing but concerns the timing they prefer.

I am not a stranger to chess programming having written the pulsar chess program that plays every wild on icc, crazyhouse, atomic 3 checks etc, and is included in the windboard 4.6 download and i've written LibraryBot on icc. finger librarybot the Mike refered to in its notes as the programmer is me.

the official download link for winboard 4.6 with pulsar is http://www.open-aurec.com/wbforum/viewtopic.php?t=51528 ;   you will see in top screen shot a purple flag for pulsar chess engine on screen shot of board and my name Mike Adams on that flag.

Lantern Chess a new ICC Mac and Windows Interface

Hi,

I am writing to introduce Lantern Chess Client for ICC, a new Interface   for chessclub.com that works on Mac Windows and Linux. Well not quite new, the team has been working on it 2.5 years (there are two of us, Mike and Andrey, and i'm the primary author) but still relatively unknown. And yes i have checked with GMTonyKosten that it's ok to post this.

Lantern is Java and GPL (open source) like Jin and offers most everything Jin is missing (crazyhouse and bughouse support, a game console, multi console, tabs, an events list, easy access to ChessFm via the Actions Window, country flags).  It only runs on ICC though and there are no plans to port to FICS as many features would not be supported on FICS.

If interested check it out at http://www.LanternChess.com
there are 6 screen shots there for those who are curious but not as inclined to go around installing new interfaces as readily.  I know many of you use internet chess servers though from what i've read your spread out between servers like Playchess, ICC and FICS as well as smaller servers, but if on ICC, particularly if you have a Mac though windows users will find lantern interesting as well, this might be something worth trying.

There is comprehensive help and help can be found in  the program via the help menu in the menu bar then the Lantern Manual menu item or on the web at http://www.lanternchess.com/lanternhelp/lantern-help.html
