Antillian - It is really not that sudden a surge. Jamaica has a long tradition of world class athletic performance. Notably, Jamaica has excelled at sprinting specifically (400 m or less) - and not so much the middle and long distances, which have been dominated by Kenyans and other East Africans.
Last night I heard a doctor specialist in sport saying that the bodies of jamaican athletes have a special enzime in the muscles that gives preponderance to speed. Maybe the secret is a mix of culture, history, training and some key characteristics. Usually bodies of common people have a diference between fast metabolism or slow one. Under 400 meters muscles and explosion are important, but for long running it is more of a light weight body. High level training to develop special characteristics is important too and today any technical staff armed with a computer can tell if someone could be a champion or very good in their field or not.

ad 1: No.
ad2: The smileys weren't meant to express funny feelings. They were meant completely serious.
It's obnoxious to deny doping in this cases.
You put a winky smiley and a laughing smiley in your comment.
So you found it funny to suggest that they were doping.
This is obnoxious because you shouldn't joke like that. It's really tasteless, what, did you expect we'd all laugh along? There's obviously no point to the olympics if they are doping.
Also jupp53, you yourself have been cheating in both FIDE and online competitions. I don't provide evidence for this, but to deny it would be obnoxious.
The word is out that you're cheating. Has this board really descended to the level of the US congress...?

And looking at the bodies of some athlets: distatefulness is the denying of doping in some cases.
Clearly the World Anti Doping Agency should hire you instead of wasting money on sophisticated tests. They will welcome your astounding ability to look at someone and tell if they are using drugs or not.
Argumentum ad personam from your side.
Argumentum ad rem: The purpose of the anti-doping organization was discussed intensively when a austrian women with a rating under 2000 was confronted at their home with a drug test. This organization is not mainly interested in discovering doping. It's interested in doing its business for money. The rules are terrifying if you're interesting in sports without doping.

@Antillian, Of course I have no hope for the US system, as my previous comment about FloJo and Marion Jones indicates. US sprinting has been blighted by drugs. I'm just responding to wild speculation to the effect that theybare always being tested, test procedures are better than ever, so they are all clean. That syllogism could have been employed at any point
in time, and yet we know the results (often with a
lag).
The case of Balco is instructive. They were operating
undetected for two decades, and were only detected
because of a whistleblower. Marion Jones, Balco client,
never failed a drugs test, and was only rumbled by
the threat of jail for perjury....so, no, I have no faith in
drug testing.
Now in the case of Jamaica, it's a supposition to put on the table that a small, poor country where sprinting
success is a matter of huge national pride might well
have weaker testing procedures than some
others....maybe it the case and maybe it isn't, but I
don't see why such a question should be verboten.
I believe the Games are rife with drugs; it doesn't reduce my enjoyment of the spectacle. Just as
example, a friend of mine was on anabolic steroids to
improve his performance in, wait for it, high school
tennis.....I have few illusions about how the 0.0001%
get to where they are. I don't need to conjure up
some sort of prelapsarian idyll to enjoy the show.

I'm not gonna go defending everyone. But you may want to read a bit about the American man's time she supposedly beat. She wasn't the only female swimmer to have beaten his time over the same distance. The selected information was an example of misusing statistics.
I'm not saying whether she doped, but what she did was completely within the realm of the possible.
Here's a published apology by Nature Magazine regarding the accusations levelled against Ye:

Smyslov_Fan - I agree with Antillian. Nobody within the sport or anywhere near the sport has accused any of the three 200m medalists from Jamaica of cheating. Yet here, there are people who think it's perfectly acceptable to cast aspersions without a shred of evidence.
Is there no other, more reasonable explanation for the success of these athletes?
I do agree with Antillian too, because with Bolt It is easy to see at naked eye the diference in his morphology and athletic level related to others. He is higher, bigger and more powerful.
The problem with doping is that is always one step in time ahead of controls but in this case these are equal for all of them. On these Olympic games the only very suspicious result was the chinese swimming sixteen girl beating not only the girls record but the americam 400 meters men. I have great doubts to believe on that because it is something that usually nevers happens but do not acuse her without further tests.

The Jamaican coroner's office had a hard time deciding if Bob Woolmer had a heart attack or was strangled at the 2007 World Cup, so I don't hold out much hope for their doping control.
Then you can't have much hope in US system either. A coroner once made an error there. Clearly this prooves the entire US drug testing system is inept.

And the British drug testing system must also be inept based on your logic.

There have been serious articles in "Die Süddeutsche Zeitung" about the Jamaikan doping control system. It's simply ridiculous and completely corrupted. And this is not the only nation. Don't forget - it's a business.
Jamaica subjects its athletes to constant random tests. Sportspersons in several disciplines have been caught and punished by the Jamaica Anti Doping Organization.
In any case, even if you want to argue that the anti doping system in Jamaica is weak, these athletes compete on the world circuit where they are constantly subjected to tests by officials outside of their host country.
Perhaps you believe that the Jamaican organizers have perfected an elaborate and sophisticated system of doping for their elite athletes that has managed to stay one step ahead of international authorities.

Well, Blake was suspended a few years back,
And there are quite some results that are suspicious. You see quite some countries making East-German improvements in a short while.
On the other hand it is much easier to handle a jury as was shown with the dressage...
If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.

My point still stands. It is is distasteful to be making these insinuations based on no evidence. You are maligning someone's character.
Funny that no one was saying these things when Americans were dominating the sprints.
You must mean FloJo, Marion Jones etc
