Agree with gwnn on the "Chebanenko Slav According to Bologan" book. I'd also recommend "the a6 slav by flear" and Andrew Martin's "Modern Slav 2nd edition" (his best opening dvd imo). Also Leonid Kritz did a 60min dvd on the a6 slav as well, I thought it was very good, like all his dvd's.

Triangle systems are ok. I play Gruenfeld and triangle lines.

Chebanenko Slav is a good choice or QGD (important from historical point of view of development of more complex systems after that, and I think there is no great player that do not know it) because it is important for a player to develop diferent skils like attack and defence to be a balanced player and I prefer this choice to another sharp opening.

The Chigorin can also be fun to play BTW. You do not have problems activating your pieces (at all). It's just that sometimes there's a weird pawn structure (e.g. white pawn island on f2, f3, e3, d4) and often you have to 'sacrifice' one or two of your bishops for knights.

White has so many options, so playing the grunfeld takes lots of work for Black - why switching to a second opening? 
The grunfeld is sound, creates imbalances, so black can play for a win - what else to expect?
  
The older, the better - over 2200 and still rising.

The Bologan book got good reviews I think (but it only covers Nf3, Nc3 systems). Also Sakaev's "Complete Slav I" came out a week ago but apparently covers the Chebanenko in 9 pages (!!).

QGA is another possibility although I love to play the white side, all your pieces get activated very fast and you can play aggressivley, didn't Kasparov use the QGA a little before he retired and Anand used it quit a bit also, another good suggestion, will look into it.  besides the DVD I think chessstars has a book on the QGA I will have to take another look.

Thanks for the advice the Ragozin and the Tarrasch might be what Im looking for, I will check out both lines...Thanks for the feed back, I realize I didn't leave many options.  Hard to find something that feels aggressive and sound like the Grunfeld, counter attacking while keepng your king pretty safe.  

I know of GM10 I believe it is and I think there is a good book out on the Ragozin, and yes I am do not fear the Catalan, just do not like the closed lines so the open might wok well...

Thanks a lot for the suggestion, did not want to become to predictable with my defense to 1.d4, two good suggestions.
Both appear to have aggression and active piece play and I would like to play some postition different from the Grunfeld sometimes for many reasons, not least of which is just to know more about chess in general, like different pawn structures and middlegame positions.  But most of all, need a back up so that like I said not so predictable!

How about the Tarrasch? There's a good Grandmaster repertoire book on it. Plus it can be used vs Flank openings too.

Wow. Not much left to choose from then. I was reading through your post thinking "well, it looks like I can at least suggest the Dutch" and then I got to the end of your post...

Maybe the Ragozin could do? The bad bishop is less of a problem there compared to other QGD lines, as White will usually play cxd5 at some point. You would still have to face the Catalan, but I suppose your worries about the bad bishop comes from the closed Catalan? You could play the open Catalan instead, where the bishop gets out on b7.
