Recently I inaugurated a blog devoted to chess book reviews.  My first review was of Hawkins' book.  Have a gander if you're so inclined.

I didn't understand the reason why J. Hawkins named a chapter: "Ulf on the Warpath! Development in the Endgame."

It's quite interesting, in the presented games Ulf Andersson was playing a meek opening with a safety net, so it seems, and then he makes some deep moves and maneuvres in the endgame and just wins the games!

As the author points out in the "Summery of Ideas":
"As a general comment, maybe more relevant to the opening than the endgame: Weaker players in particular find deploying or redeploying their pieces under duress (as in these games because of threat and initiative) a difficult task.

The players of the black pieces in these games were strong players, but still found a harmonious deployment difficult to achieve."

Re R+B vs. R
I had it myself several times. The importance is that it may save positions in practical endgames R+B+pawns were youre a pawn down. ..
And unless I am mistaken I saw it recently in the Tata tournament. But of course in pct of games it is a small percentage. At the same time, positions from deep opening analysis may never show up in any of your games.

Congratulations. I think the internet needs more of these, actually. Plenty of my fav reviewers aren't doing it anymore or have slowed the pace of their reviews to a crawl.

The remarkable thing about that improvement curve (under the grade progress tab) is just how smooth it is. Not especially fast, or even at times almost slow, improvement but also very sustained. Most people jump for a few years then stick.

I'm not sure entirely how meaningful his ECF grade is anymore mind - with playing all the congresses/local leagues that he does he's got an awful lot of games in there where he's been winning (very) consistently against 'weak' players.

Put me in the 'thought it was a rotten review' camp, but since most of what I was going to say about it has already been said I'll just add

As for Jonathan Hawkins, I reckon anybody in English chess who has an interest in the game that goes beyond their own local league knows of him.  One of the things that 'everybody knows' is that his elo rating doesn't reflect his true strength due to a lack of opportunities to play rated games.  (4ncl aside, league chess in england is usually unrated).

His English Chess Federation grade is probably a more accurate reflection of his improvement.  You can see how it's developed since 1996 here:-

If the main gripe with the book is that the title is misleading, it would hardly be the first: 'Play Like a Grandmaster', 'Winning Pawn Structures', 'Winning with the X'. Let's engage with the content.

That review is an awful 'look at me' hatchet job, but at least it has the virtue of being transparent.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_endgame#Frequency_table

The link to the Frequency table in Wikipedia reveals that it is amore plausible 1.7 percent of games that become Rook and Bishop plus pawns versus Rook and pawns , not the Arkell speciality with just the pieces.

To go back to the review and the book Amatuer to IM. some of the review is petty such as the nitpicking about Karlsbad which is certainly the standard name for such structures regardless of geography.

The main gripe though is that the book is not really revealing how Jonathan Hawkins went from fairly good club player to virtually grandmaster. We all know about needing to study more endings. But Hawkins improvement is not just down to ending study, e.g there is a video on You Tube where he out calculates Simon Williams. On the video the Ginger GM mentions his good opening preparation and calculation, there may be some specific reasons why he had such a relatively  low rating till his Twenties.
for instance he went to a comprehensive school in North of England rather than an academic hothouse like St Paul's in London of King Edwards in Birmingham which produced many English GMs
I read that he also has a fear of travelling abroad which may have hampered his development.

I would have been more interested if the book dealt more with improvement in calculating skills like Tisdall's did and simply somepersonal history about his chess development and motivation.

there is inevitably in the pocket Fritz era perhaps some
suspicion about such a drastic increase in rating, though I see Hawkins has also won The British Rapidplay championship which would be evidence that his strength increase is genuine.

Arkell claims to have been on the stronger side 17 times. Clearly he seems to aim for this endgame since he knows how to squeeze out a win!

Arkell also claims to have played more than 6000 games.

I very much doubt it even then Smiley Have to imagine that Keith has played rather more than ~900 (17 * 60) games. Quite possibly an awful lot more.....

I also have trouble believing RB -v- R turns up up 1.77% of games

I share your opinion. I played as FM more than 600 rated games and not once this endgame popped up. Neither can I remember even a blitz or rapidgame in which i encountered this endgame.
However I remember an interview of 2009 in which Keith Arkell (Britisch GM, you surely must know) claimed to have it already met 17 times on the board, achieving an astonishing 17/17 !! See http://streathambrixtonchess.blogspot.be/2009/11/arkell-interview-iii.html

So if you take the statistics of the games of Keith Arkell then I am pretty sure that 1,77% is realistic.
If you take my database then you get 0%. I mean, it really depends which database you are using. Statistics can prove anything.

I also want to indicate that today I would use the second rank defense. Very easy to study and explained on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rook_and_bishop_versus_rook_endgame#Second-rank_def...

Maybe they queried a database of Keith Arkell games  Smiley

Anyhow, the % of endgames in which technical endings appear is not a relevant metric; how can you evaluate or play a more complex ending if you don't have a handle on the implications of simplification? So the appearance of a textbook ending is neither here nor there; what's important is assessing the potential simplification down to such an ending.

The R&B vs R percentage looks absurd to me too Smiley Perhaps its a percentage of games that were played out to the end, or past some move limit like 60(? 80?), or something?

Still I don't think I can ever remember even seeing it.

R & P vs R I have although really not very often. I'm not at all sure if I've ever reached it myself.

Interesting clip of Gustafsson as well. I can't agree with Svidler that most technical endings can be played like studies! Good luck with that - there's a reason it took players fifty years to discover the Vancura draw, for example. In fact when Svidler was commenting on the Anand-Gelfand rapid game when Gelfand made such a thingy of R & P -v- R he wasn't exactly giving the impression it was possible even for him to calculate it as a study, so the rest of us might struggle.

I also have trouble believing RB -v- R turns up up 1.77% of games and RP -v R in 0.67%. In fact I would venture to say it was total bollocks, though naturally I stand to be corrected if a database search says different. In that case I'll just have to conclude that my own experience is atypical, I guess.

I'm with Alias; I think that's a good review. I don't agree with it: personally I'd value the book a fair bit more than the reviewer, but that's a difference of opinion. And I agree that the cover and blurb are hideous.

The thing is that the reviewer had actually read the book and given it much thought. Most reviews on the net are totally useless. Basically the list of content and some very vague opinion which gives the feeling of that the reviewer just flipped through the book before writing the review. When reading this review I thought the same as you at first, but given some more thought I liked that the reviewer compared this book to others of the same genre.

That was the most overwritten review in recent memory. The writer is totally in love with the sound of his own voice. Pretty much every sentence reads like it was first written straightforwardly and made as florid as possible. I wouldn't want to run into this guy at a party.

I did find it pretty hilarious that the ninth paragraph of the review begins "Enough of the preamble, on to A2IM itself.".

I agree.  That review is a hatchet job.  Certainly there are criticisms to be made - and I'll be doing so on a new chess book review blogs soon - but there's personal animosity simmering there.

Really? That was well written?

The reviewer, Vijay Raghavan, spent the first six paragraphs of his review talking about the cover in depth and other chess improvement books.

He spent a paragraph complaining about the spelling of Carlsbad/Karlsbad/Karlovy.

Just when you think you're getting to the meat of the review, the reviewer discusses an argument between Capablanca and Lasker about the importance of the endgame. He references, Lamprecht and Muller, Wikipedia, Gustafsson,  and Svidler, barely mentioning the book he's supposedly reviewing.

Clearly, the reviewer hated the book. He seems to personally dislike the author, too. Here's his final paragraph:

"I would remind Hawkins that virtually all the terrible "improvement" books that litter the market today are the work of a small group of former chess players; by definition, these writers are incapable of producing measurable improvement in themselves. I hope Hawkins does not hasten to join this guild of defeated warriors too soon; rather than writing books to tell us how it is done, he should show us how in the best possible way: by playing chess. There will be plenty of time to pontificate when he resigns from competitive chess forever."

Source:
http://www.chesscafe.com/Reviews/review865.htm

The review itself needs a summary. Don't judge a book by its cover unless you dislike both the cover and the book. Then you can spend all the ink you want dissing the cover.

There are a lot of terrible books out there that don't help players to improve despite their promises. This is probably one of them.

The book is not encyclopedic. The author's choices aren't always the most useful choices. The book has typos and more importantly, misses some key ideas in the endgames he covers.

There are some really cool complex endgames analysed. The reviewer particularly liked  Sasikiran-Carlsen (Sarajevo, 2006), Nakamura-Kudrin (Reno, 2004), and Aronian-Bacrot (Khanty Mansyisk, 2005), calling his analysis "clear and insightful", but giving no example of it.

Beyond that, the reviewer didn't have much positive to say about the book. But despite slamming the book from beginning to end, he gave it 3 out of 6 stars. I'm not quite sure why it deserved three stars based on the comments of the reviewer.

It's an interesting book with interesting analysis. As a roadmap to becoming an IM (couldn't you have waited a couple of years for a more seductive title, Jonathan?!) I'm not so sure. I suspect there are as many ideal ways to do this as there are people. The one thing they all have in common is the proverbial ten thousand of hours of work; if you do that and work hard while you're doing it, my guess is that what you're actually up to exactly makes precious little difference.

yes and no, I have seen many a player make the same mistake again and again because they simply refused to look at their hard losses. I feel like while simply brute studying might be enough at some point that perhaps more focused and regimented studying would get you to your goals more efficiently.

He doesnt realy promis that the reader will become IM. All he is saying is that the biggest improvement in his own game came from studying the endgame and in this book he will share some of the studies that helped him. So the title refers to his own development not the expecteddevelopment of the reader.
