The phrase "magnetic chess set" prompts me to think of the Drueke travel chess set that comes as a short 8x8 inches box (with real 3D pieces, not just 2D tiles with piece icons painted on).

On Amazon.com I have posted a review, with a three star rating (3 out of 5).

GM Review:
http://www.amazon.com/Drueke-877-10-Magnetic-Chess-Set/product-reviews/B00078MMR...

Main Product Page:

BTWay, only in desparation would I consider a 2D smartphone ("hand PC" ?) chess board as a substitute for a 3D travel set.

I have been in touch with him recently since I had lost some of the pieces for my magnetic board. It turns out he still has some pieces left, but no boards. Apparently the demand for such boards is going down, probably because of electronic solutions like the one Keano mentioned.

Personally, though, I much prefer a physical chess board to an electronic one. Even though I am used to electronic devices both at work and at home, there are two areas where I am struggling to concentrate when I am doing it electronically: Analyzing chess and reading books.

John what is it with this magnetic chess set? Have you got a smart phone? If so recommend a free app called droid fish, use it on the train every day to work now for playing through what ever enters my head.

Thanks, Viking. I've emailed him, but he doesn't reply yet.

Sigh. Back in 2006 I left this in the hands of those who administer my Christmas and birthday present lists. I can see that was a fatal mistake.

Mine (in use every day) is marked with "Smartfish chess masters" which was held in 2004/2005. I think the owner of sjakkbutikken.no was part of the team organizing that great event. I propose contacting him directly. Contact info can be found here: http://www.sjakkbutikken.no/info/butikken-i-drammen/

There were several chess sites in Norway that used to sell those magnetic sets (like the federation at www.sjakk.no and the shop www.sjakkbutikken.no), but it seems they don't list them anymore.

Maybe it's possible to track down who made or distributed them from one of those sources?

A few years ago I posted this thread

http://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1158592700/0#0

begging for assistance to track down the magnetic set I wanted.

Many posters, especially VIking and Alias, were very helpful and located exactly what I had in mind.

However, embarrassingly enough, I have to admit that I then failed to clinch the deal, and the links that they provided are now broken.

I don't suppose anyone can track down the travelling set being sported by the small Asian-looking boy in the photo about a third of the way down this page, can they?!

http://chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=3356

Many thanks in advance for any help.
