Yeah, I got one of those and it fills the spot perfectly. Bought it at one of the Tiger stores in Copenhagen for about 20 Dkr (iirc everything in those stores are 10 or 20 Dkr) - i.e. much cheaper than the link, though it's probably not in stock there anymore...

The old Drueke sets when they were made in the USA were the best.

This!

Here's mine. Bought it when I was first getting in to chess nearly 15 years ago. Still going strong (haven't lost any pieces, magnets still work great, etc); I've taken this thing all over the place. Best $20 investment ever.

Apologies for the lighting. Best I could do at midnight on my phone!

Is that the same as this set? It's still about $20.

I have room on my desk for a smaller set, but I'd like something either well-weighted or magnetic.

That was a nice set, but not the best one to bring for travels I guess  Grin

Audio Chess still being around was rather a shock for me as well!  I do like the magnetic set James Vigus pointed out though.

I remember those being advertised in CHESS magazine about 25 years ago.  Do I also remember a very young James Vigus writing a letter around the same time (asking - not unreasonably in my view - why they were bothering with a beginners corner when no beginner would ever buy a specialist chess mag)?

I somehow doubt AudioChess does much business now.  The email link doesn't work, I know that.  Also, the front page says it's 25 years old, but it must be more like 35 now if not more.

Flipping Heck! Audio Chess is still going?  Amazing.

This

is very possibly the best thing that Ray Keene ever published.

I ran across this while trying to find the set.  (I like it but I certainly wouldn't want the "chess annotation number"on the squares.

http://andrewmikhael.com/chess

Doesn't look like he reveals the size of the board on the website either.

I have a really tiny magnetic chess set (two actually, but my sister "borrowed" one a few years ago and never returned it), they are only a couple of euro. They are so small the whole board and pieces will fit in a trousers pocket, and yet look great set up, they are cool to own even as an ornament. My fingers are small though and even with me it can be a little bit clumsy at times, but not uncomfortable. I just measured it as 4.6"x4.6"x(1/3)".

The screen of a smartphone is small, but one is used to looking at small things on it, so it doesn't seem so bad. A chess board on my iPhone is just about the same size as a diagram in a 2-column book (I just checked), so you're probably used to looking at 2D boards that size already.

Funny that you'd never consider a 3D magnetic board, I'd never consider a 2D one. I bought this 3D magnetic set a couple of years ago and use it all the time even when not traveling, just on my lap when I'm reading a book or to play variations on when I'm at a real board. My only complaint is that I wish the color of the dark squares were more different from the color of the black pieces (the photos are misleading in this respect), but it's not a big deal.

>BTWay, only in desparation would I consider a 2D smartphone ("hand PC" ?) chess board as a substitute for a 3D travel set.

Strange, I'd never consider a 3D one. Nor do I have a smartphone. Wouldn't it have rather a annoying small screen? Perhaps I don't understand what a smartphone is.

Girkassa - aha, thanks. That could work just as well in a way, since losing pieces from my old and much-used one is why I want to replace it. Buying substitute pieces would be just as good if not better. Now if the chap will just answer my emails.....

The old Drueke sets when they were made in the USA were the best. Now they are made in China with crappy quality control and the magnets fall out way too often.
