Why should this be a problem for someone who plays the NID/Blumenfeld combo anymore than for someone who plays say the Lasker Defence or Tartakower?! Is there anything preventing Black from adopting something active like the recommendation of IM John Cox?

Of course you're right MNb; I meant that in the context of the original post, there's no "early ...b7-b5 to undermine the c-pawn" line in the Catalan.  Nothing like 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 b6 4.g3 Ba6 5.b3 b5, even.

From a practical perspective as well, it would be nice to combine 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 c5 4.g3 with 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.g3 c5 4.Nf3.  After 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.g3 c5 4.d5 Black can of course also just play the Modern Benoni, which IMO is probably best and only one Benoni line for Black to learn (I don't trust 4.d5 exd5 5.exd5 b5).

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

the following are also 'b5-lines' but not all are gambits:
1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.g3 c5 4.d5 exd5 5.exd5 b5

Has this become playable again?  The recent statistics are absolutely dreadful, though it's been a while since Avrukh's book was published and I presume that theory has moved on since.  It's a problem for people wanting to play a Nimzo/Blumenfeld repertoire.

My first thought was the Vitolinsh gambit in the Nimzo vs 4.Qc2, then I found another list of gambits: http://www.vikingskak.dk/GambiteersGuild/Gambits/d4Nf6.htm

In the 4. e3 Nimzo a possibility is 4...O-O 5. Bd3 c5 6. d5 b5 (played by Karpov against Korchnoi).

Various ...b5-gambits after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6

I am currently exploring the idea of gambitting the b5-pawn after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 (so no Benko).

The Blumenfeld of course: 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 c5 4.d5 b5.
In the Nimzo : Leningrad 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.Bg5 h6 5.Bh4 c5 6.d5 b5, and Classical 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.Qc2 0-0 5.a3 Bxc3 6.Qxc3 b5.

Do you know more lines implementing this idea? Whether it be in the Nimzo, the QID, the Bogo, the Benoni, the Ragozin maybe... Do not forget in the Catalan-like lines (after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.g3) if you know any!
thx!
