Good to see Jacob Aagard also coming out against the ageism propaganda in his blog.

I have to agree with everything he says.

I agree the article is well written. Nevertheless I have some things which can be added as you can read in the comments below the article.

What a birthday present for Boris Gelfand - born 24.06.1968!

Will you still be winning tourmanents...
...will you still greet me, will you still need me, when I'm 64?"

Kasparov has also claimed that a swansong is not at all unusual for an older player, let's see how the rest of 2013 and 2014 plays out for him.

Steinitz and Botvinnik each won world championship matches against younger opponents when older than Anand is now. It's sour grapes for Kasparov.

Yes, a very nice tournament win by Gelfand proving once again that ageism should be abolished from chess. Garry Kasparov are you watching? Age matters not.

Is Gelfand already too old for all these sharks?

definitely not, he simply won the tournament!

In very impressive fashion. His wins against Nakamura and Caruana were really impressive. Kramnik is appearently finishing last, since Moro is completely winning against Nakamura! Tough times for him.

In my opinion Nakamura should be getting a reputation as brilliant endgame player, even stronger than most of his peers.  Shirov wrote in Fire on Board that he believed he was strongest in the endgame, due to his calculation ability.  I think Nakamura shares this quality with Shirov.  Even when Nakamura plays poorly in the early parts of the game, he seems to have a particularly strong mastery of defensive ideas in inferior endgames.

I too was thinking exactly this yesterday. I agree - it seems as though his knowledge of technical endgames is quite good, and his obvious skill in calculating variations helps him here as well. He's more mature than ever, and it seems as though he's finally proving he's one of the best. I haven't always been a fan, but more and more I find myself routing for him - his games are always interesting, and he's always willing to fight!

Nakamura is #5 in the world, 2 rating points from being top 3. He has the highest rating of any American player ever. Yeah, he's good in the endgame! He's also the fourth youngest player currently in the top ten.

If he was some anonymous Russian, he would be touted as a possible heir to the throne, but because he's viewed as an obnoxious brat by the internet chess community, his obvious skills are often ignored.

I'm not a Naka fanboy, but his accomplishments should speak for themselves.

For me this revelation was somewhat unexpected from the guy who not-so-long-ago was playing 2.Qh5, and seemed to play a sort of "poker-playing" gambling/swindling approach.  Naka has played a few very clean technical wins lately.

It's interesting that after six rounds the four Russians haven't managed a single win

Perhaps the NSA has been snooping on their prep and giving it to Nakamura.

ok, but standard positions are also important tools for decision making in more complex endgames.

Also the time controls require good knowledge of the endgame (to the point of becoming a 'second nature').

On a different topic: Both players have their inherent weaknesses and also exhibit some temporary ones. They don't have the time to eliminate all of them until the WCh, so it is more realistic to expect that the winner will be the one that is more capable in employing the best strategy to capitalise on any such weaknesses. Unless, they surprise us with something brand new in chess (highly unlikely imo).
