"This seemingly easy pawn study took me an hour to solve. Two refusals of captures leave a good impression. The study, which is based upon a practical game, has some theoretical value. When I found out that the composer was the under-9 world champion (Poland 2011) I was surprised. I wish him a great future as a chess player and composer!"

Three more studies from the same tourney follow from young Azerbaijan composers. The solution is posted immediately since I'd think they are not as interesting to solve.

According to the judge, this was only included in the award because it was obviously composed by a beginner (probably to encourage him).


The tourney winners, by the way, were Ilham Aliev (prize) and the deceased Samir Badalov (special prize), two famous composers. The tourney was only open to composers from Azerbaijan.

The hard part isn't so much white's first move, but finding Black's best resources and then overcoming them. 

I failed.
