I think you should read the latest Chess Life, December 2013 issue. There is an excellent letter to the editor about the Dark Knight system. Criticizes Finegold and gives reasons what his problem is.

Hi Gambit! Not seen you around here for a while, hope you are well!
Do you have a link please?
Best,
B

When someone of the order of Ben Finegold criticises this book (or was it mainly the opening itself he was criticising? -- not sure), I pay attention. And of course I respect what you say, leavenfish -- but it would be much more helpful if you could give some concrete examples.

Best to disregard Finegold, I suggest. Impression I have is 'Oooh, look at me, I'm a big player'. Unpleasant commentary style I saw at St. Louis in the one vid I partly watched. Ugh. Interesting to note he is no longer employed there.
He appears to dismiss the book because the author is an FM.

Got it. Don't like it. I played the Tango for a couple of years, thought this might be interesting. It's just not good...dodgy evaluations for the most part. Not so objective.

So do I, I'll ask him  Wink

Actually, I'd only been looking at Schuler's book from the 1. e4 perspective, since after 1. e4 d6 2. d4 Nf6 3. Nc3 I have played 3. ...g6,  3. ...c6, 3. ...e5 and 3. ...Nbd7, but not 3. ...Nc6 which tranposes into Chapter 6 and gives me a new option, assuming I like the positions, but I've not delved in too much there so far.

However this is a d4 thread, and since I like getting to a KID via 1. ...d6, I'd not looked at these parts of the book yet. I have some thoughs on this though, which I might get round to posting sometime.

In Sisyphus' line, Glenn's 15 ...ef! 16 Bf4 Ne5 looks just fine for Black to me -- lovely potential dark-field activity, thanks in part to h2-h3. Maybe the other plan of 15 ...e4 is OK too (it mightn't be easy for White to get a big g2-g4 in?), but Glenn's line is much more dynamic. Big analogy with the 7 ...Nbd7 Classical KID -- I wonder what JEH thinks of these positions ...

After 8 0-0 iso 8 h3, the dark knight move is 8 ...a5, with obvious ideas (... Na6/ ...Nc5/... Nfd7) ...

I've been hugely busy in recent months and haven't had time to look at The Dark Knight System in depth, but basically I think it's a good book. I'm sure some of the analysis could be deepened/improved, but that's true of most books and as a practical intro to 1 ...Nc6 lines I think it does a good job. Nice friendly writing style as well, without a trace of that tedious hop-skip-and-jumping we’ve had lately from one or two other authors …

I did compare Schuyler’s analysis of 1 d4 Nc6 2 d5 Ne5 with the lines explored on the thread on here. Conclusion: favourable to Schuyler in almost all cases.

but of course there have to be other options for white after move 7, how about simply omitting h3 and allowing Ng4:
8.O-O Nbd7 9.Be3 Ng4 10.Bd4 and now Houdini gives Bh6 which looks a bit ridiculous to me after 11.Ne1 Ngf6 12.f4, but exchanging dark-squared bishops can't be the way to go for black
another possible line (playing in the same way as the original line): 8.O-O Nbd7 9.Be3 Nc5 10.Qc2 a5 11.Rad1 Nfd7 12.Nd4 e5 13.dxe6 fxe6 14.Ndb5 b6 15.f4 looks like an unpleasant Maroczy bind to me

or does Schuyler have a solution to this?

Maybe someone else will take the time to analyze these exact suggestions, but for the record, Schuyler does acknowledge that White has the advantage.  His claim is just that Black's disadvantage isn't great and that he has dynamic counter-chances.

Schuyler's book about a repertoire with 1...Nc6 looks interesting, but in one of the first lines I examined I'm not totally convinced by his analysis:

p. 21: After 1.d4 Nc6 2.Nf3 d6 3.c4 g6! 4.d5! Nb8 5.Nc3 Bg7 6.e4 Nf6 7.Be2 0-0 8.h3 Nbd7 9.Be3 Nc5! 10.Qc2 a5 11.0-0 Nfd7! (all his punctuations) he gives 12.Nd4 e5 13.Ndb5 f5 with good play.

In my opinion White has the better game after the typical 14.exf5 gxf5 15.f4!

Undecided

White appears to be the one with the initiative but Black does have a lot of dynamic possibilities after 15...exf4 16.Bxf4 Ne5.  I looked at some possibilities after this and it's surprisingly hard for White to keep Black contained.  Maybe (probably?) there's a path to advantage for White but I haven't found it.

The position looks difficult to play for Black in my opinion, but perhaps this comes from the fact that I like to play against the KID?

you could also look at it as a classical KID with 7.O-O Nbd7 (or Na6) 8.d5 Nc5 with two free moves for white (in this case h3 and Be3), which is of course also a Petrosian KID with 7.d5 Nbd7 8.O-O Nc5

Despite this after having looked at it awhile Black still seems OK to me.  Perhaps I'm trusting my computer too much though.

More generally, it would surely be surprising if 6...Nc6 7. d5 Nb8 in the Classical KID should not lead to "+=".
