Here's my first effort with the Prins (correspondence at ICCF), adopting the book's recommended 17.c5!? I don't know if I missed a winning opportunity anywhere, but I really liked the coordination of White's pieces (and the potential for Black's position to crumble) around move 20.

Having worked through a number of games in the book—predominantly in the more popular lines—I'm a little disappointed. The analysis is rather light and there's only limited discussion of themes, plans, and ideas. Maybe I'm being too quick to judge, but the book seems slapped together rather quickly...

He doesn't really offer a specific line, but he recommends piece development before pawn commitment in this line.

I've only dipped into this book, but as the author indicates, steamrolling is a slow and steady process. He doesn't promise fast and violent games, but rather a systematic squeezing of the Black position, based on the Maroczy bind. I'll want to study the book a bit more before offering any kind of opinion on its merits (or that of the opening), but I don't see anything inherently wrong with an early f3 for White. It might not be the most lively option, but I don't think it dooms White to passivity and/or inferior play.

I was reminded of this thread when I saw this rather striking game from the past weekend.  Tiviakov eschewed the old main move 12...Rfc8.  Smeets considered 16...e6 and 19...Rxc1 20. Rxc1 Rc8 to be improvements.

Maybe you mean Greet's book?
I've seen differing opinions over the years as to whether 12...Qxa2 should be sufficient for equality.

Yes, I believe this is the idea (i.e. early f3 is well complemented with the Bishop staying at Bf1).

Flear in his book on the AD pays attention to this line (which is not his ML against the Gurgenidze btw) and I believe it has great practical value for a White player. However, Black can deviate earlier (has 2 good systems to choose from, one of them is 12. ... Qxa2).

Well, with Black playing classical moves such as ...Be6 and ...Qa5, there are lines with f3 and a later Nd5 (with the bishop still on f1) which have been considered major tries for White.

For instance, Black would have to watch out for this kind of thing.

you're right, hadn't looked at that, only small remark I can add is that black has to know the Classical Sicilian 6.f3 line after 6.Nc3, which indeed is completely innocuous and rarely played in this position
edit: but I guess a dragon approach is possible here too
