Interesting that Anand didn't play 11...Nf6 12.0-0 Bf5 which seems totally equal. He is one of the best prepared players in the world, so what happened..?

Huh

I'm rooting for Anand to win this one, but I suspect that his best chess is about 5 years behind him. If Carlsen wins an early game in the same style where he beat Anand so convincingly just a few months ago, this could be a very lopsided match.

I think it's fate that Anand wins this match. I doubt it being held in India will impact Anand, I'm sure he and his team will have prepared intensely for this match. All the pressure is on Carlsen to win. Lets not forget Carlsen stumbled over the line in London on tie breaks. If Anand does win this match, I hope the chess community gives Anand the respect he deserves, it will complete his legacy. I really hope it doesn't turn into a "I can't believe Carlsen lost" type of hysteria.

I have a feeling Anand will win this match. Carlsen has not been that impressive recently, despite the results. For example the win against Aronian in the USA he was outplayed as White and then Aronian went mad and played like an idiot. Anands play in technical endgames is almost perfect while Carlsen has been slipping up a good bit in these. Its funny because I thought Gelfand would beat Anand, but I am giving him some edge here because of extra motivation and assuming he'll start the match in good shape.

I think Carlsen will simply outplay Anand, and that it will either end up +2 for Carlsen or--if Anand cracks, + 3 or more. Kramnik commented that Anand is a little bit afraid of Carlsen, and that does not bode well for the champion.

I also think that Anand's consenting to have the match in Chennai is already a concession on his part--he has commented that it was exceedingly difficult to play against Kamsky in India, and spoke with his actions when he chose to play Topalov in Sofia. Let the opponent deal with that stress! So this time, it seems to me, Anand is already in a (generous) valedictory mood.  That would be another similarity with Lasker-Capablanca, and, as in that earlier match, a serious omen of the outcome.

Regarding the age issue: another comparison might be the Botvinnik-Petrosian match, where the champion was 52, 18 years older than the challenger. It is notable, however, that there the match remained tied after 14 games: only after game 15 did Petrosian run away with it. It is possible, therefore, that age will not be much of a factor in this shorter match.

Anyway, Anand has been a worthy champion. It's pleasant to to reflect that, regardless of the outcome, the crown will be in good, gentlemanly hands. There will be no need for a "human cluster" of concerned champions to forestall anyone's victory this time.

Well, as wrote earlier - if there is a tiebreak it should have its own poll, as speed chess or blitz would be another matter entirely.

But your comment may explain why no one has voted for a drawn match, which is strange considering that the most common expectation for each player is only a +1 win.

True - would Anand be the favourite in a tie-break? Presumably so given his record in this format, but not by much.

A drawn match is impossible. If the match is tied after regulation, it goes into tie breaks. It would have been interesting to include tie-break possibilities, but it's too late now.

It seems that betting on Anand will at least give you good odds! : )

Still, Anand is a much more experienced match-player (has Magnus even played a match before?) and theoretically I think he also has an edge, while youth and general playing strength is on Carlsen's side.

Anyhow, someone asked me yesterday what previous WC-match this one is most similar to? So, I'm forwarding the question here...

My response was Lasker-Capablanca, though I think Lasker was clearly older than Anand is, but at least it fits the "wily experience vs stronger youth"-description...

Well, the poll question is "Who wins?" so obviously I expect the match to take place. And since Carlsen already visited India in August as preparation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSjYOwbCNHk) I don't see why it shouldn't...

Who will win the World Championship Match?

I left out the choice of anyone winning in the tiebreak of speed or blitz as the match itself will hopefully provide a winner. If there is a tiebreak it should have its own poll.

The match site is up now: http://chennai2013.fide.com/

Let the speculations begin!  Smiley

Will Anand manage to outprepare Magnus or will Carlsen outplay him in the long run?
