It would be interesting to see carlsens preparation against d4. According to my database anand has never won with d4 against magnus so may that may be another mental barrier anand is facing before entering that territory.

I also believe that anand wanted a risk free game today with draw as a likely outcome. As it has turned out in this match playing with black is not any particular disadvantage and "wasting" another white is not that important. And yes I assume he is worried about keeping a potential loss to the minimum. Thus I doubt we will see anything drastic try like the kings gambit, evans or similar.

Suspect he was happy to kill this game after the two previous ones. It certainly looked that way.

If he can survive the next game in decent shape then maybe a small chance if the pressure starts to get to Carlsen. Also of course worth keeping the match score reasonable/self respect.

An new draw in Berlin, Anand should consider something else and maybee something that not fashion like Spanish Four Knights? Or gamble with Kings Gambit or perhpas even open with 1 d4?

Seems surprising to me that Anand chose to go for the Berlin again instead of trying 1. d4... its like Kasparov-Kramnik all over again  Undecided

I don't think this is a sad end to Anand's tenure; his performance against Gelfand left a strong impression that he was only keeping the seat warm.

I wouldn't have thought before the match it was possible for Anand to lose an endgame like that, but you are right - there is an element of psychology coming into play here.

Cracking under pressure rather than purely self destructing though. You'd have backed Carlsen before the match to win one or two games precisely like this.

Not that it might not turn quite ugly now. Hope not.

I recognize terror as the finest emotion in a chessgame and so I will try to terrorize my opponent. But if I find that I cannot terrify, I will try to horrify, and if I find that I cannot horrify ...

To me it's not that sad, unless the change of generations is always sad. Anand's play was not that terrible. Capablanca, Botvinnik, and many other great players sometimes got demoralized and lost the next one after a hard loss. Anand did that here--but he is more than capable of the opposite, as he showed against Topalov and Gelfand. It just wasn't his day today. Probably he was too shaken from the start, and if we were inside his nervous system we would see that he had no choice but to try to play quietly today.

Carlsen has been doing this to a lot of the world's best lately--like Karjakin and Aronian, who recently lost drawn positions after prolonged pressure by Carlsen. Lasker and Karpov did it to people as well--Tarrasch thought everyone played worse around Lasker, who just saw incredible details in endgames--remember the Reti-study-like draw against Tarrasch?

I think today it was a case of "there's no flying hence, nor tarrying here."

Anand was clearly devastated in the press conference, he did not expect lose that endgame. And he shouldn't have but somehow managed it!! I don't blame him at all for his reaction.

Its a sad end to his World ch tenure, I only hope he can produce at least one good game now before the end to say "look - thats what I can do".

Agree. At the same time the match is followed by a lot not having a clue what chess is really about - so stupid questions do come up. I think Anands reacted naturally after a second loss and being frustrated and disappointed.

I was surprised that Anand got snippy there since he's usually so calm and friendly, but it was a pretty stupid question.

Quote:
Ok, he did a blunder in the endgame but to be me the big question is why he played Qg3 going into an inferior endgame being a pawn down instead of just manouvering around.

Yeah, that was weird. One of the commentators said he thought that Anand might have thought that the rook ending a pawn down would be a fairly straightforward draw that he could just play according to general principles, while a Q+R ending would require lots of actual calculation every move. Carlsen said in the press conference that Anand "sacrificed or maybe blundered" the pawn, so it seems the reason wasn't so clear to him either.

Someone asked him about Qg3 at the press conference and I was interested in hearing his reasoning, but he just said something like "Sometimes it is just not your day."

Ok, he did a blunder in the endgame but to be me the big question is why he played Qg3 going into an inferior endgame being a pawn down instead of just manouvering around. I think anand is seeing ghosts and lack confidence in himself thinking carlsen can do his magic in every position to keep game going, improving and improving his position and finally win in the end (which he did although with some help).

He was asked awful questions, what can he do? They should leave him alone after such a loss and ask Carlsen instead.
