From the press conference as well as the length of time to play his first move, it appeared that Anand was simply not prepared for 1. e4 and thus played if safe. It is hard to make any assumptions from that about his strategy for the rest of the match.

Yeah, saw Short on Twitter arguing that possibility. Still, to play an entire WC match as defending champion without moving a piece in anger seems incredible beyond belief.

Don't think Anand was upset by the easy draw though.

At least if Carlsen has gone into 'lead protection' mode all he needs is a nice win in the next two games then some nerves to get another one. Still very unlikely of course, but had he lost the match would have been absolutely over.

Although there is the nagging feeling that he might conceivably have had enough and be happy to coast to game 11.

That line Carlsen played is a very annoying one for Berlin players, well those trying to win anyway.

I think Anand is just trying to stabilize his nervous system, draw with Black, send a message to Carlsen that Anand is not afraid of endgames, and strike an independent and in a certain sense defiant note by confronting Carlsen with his own preparation, as Bronstein, Botvinnik, and Smyslov used to do. I expect a sharp White game from Anand to appear on the board soon, unless he's much more demoralized than I thought and is just trying to bring the match in at a respectable 6.5-4.5.

By the way, what in the world happened to this website yesterday? It was blocked.

well, if the selection process 2 years ago would have been different then Carlsen could have been world champion already
it's amazing to see how Gelfand is still winning tournaments at his age, but was he really the most challenging opponent available?

Well it's somewhat unbecoming of a world champion to lose that ending, I'll give you that.  But that's why we're about to have a new world champion.  I just don't understand why we call this "psychology."

well I would say for a World ch to lose that ending its as much as saying I have no place even being near this spot. As somebody said earlier Anand was not convincing against Gelfand, and I actually tipped Gelfand to win that match beforehand because Anand in general has been unconvincing for a long while now. For some reason (maybe the romantic in me) I thought he could get it back for this match because of the extra motivation, preparation, etc. but ultimately I was wrong. As I said when he played Gelfand it is very hard to just switch it on when you have not been doing the business.

This match has been sad for me because a World champion should never lose like that, not once but twice.

I'h have to respectfully disagree. As Anand said in the press conference a player much weaker than himself could have drawn that ending, it was not complex in any way. Fair play to Carlsen carrying on to the end, but for a World champion to lose in that manner is very very sad IMO.

I don't know why this kind of thing is always called "psychology." Carlsen plays very well and he poses many practical problems for his opponents, very similar to what Karpov used to do.  Eventually they fail to solve one, usually because of fatigue I think.

It's just very practical chess, set your opponent as many problems over the board as you possibly can, and always choose continuations that give him a chance to go wrong.  It's good technique and results from incredible chess understanding, concentration, and creativity to find all of these little subtleties and tricks without damaging your own position too much.  Calling it psychology makes it sound like a bunch of antics or name calling, which it certainly isn't.

To me it's remarkable that Carlsen is using his fav defense to the Kingpawn, and Anand cannot find some sort of stable advantage after months of prep time.

Based on these developments and the Ushenina - Hou match, it's apparently easier to play Black now in a World Championship match.

As a psychologist I very often wonder what people call psychological. Carlssen plays the way he did before and Anand does this too, if I can judge this with my rating and experience.

I must remember a football remark of a German trainer. He said something like: "The reporters always talk about the psychological awkward moment of a counter-goal short before the half-time break. I don't understand this. There's no psychological good moment for a counter-goal."

One could transfer this to most commenting sentences about psychology in a chess match.

I wouldn't have thought before the match it was possible for Anand to lose an endgame like that, but you are right - there is an element of psychology coming into play here.

It's not the openings that are causing Anand problems. He gets pretty good games with 1.e4. Switching openings won't address the root problems for Anand, so I was expecting him to continue with the Spanish. Well, at least for this game. We'll see if he switches up after he draws the next game.

Added:

If he loses the next game, the match is over and any opening he may play will be for show anyway.
