Ah yes, I had noticed that game.  Regarding the opening, my first thought was 6...c5 -- not mentioned by Barden, but I see that it has been a main book move (e.g. given as "!" by Gheorghiu and Samarian long ago).  7...c5 and 7...Bb4 are evidently reversed in Barden's comment.

I'm not aware that that particular ...a6 line has ever been very popular; I recalled it as having been played by IMs Minev and B. Kogan.

This week's column by Leonard Barden in the Guardian features an interesting attempt to hack up the a6 Slav. The White plan is to exploit the loss of time inherent in playing .. a6 by getting Ne5 and f4 in and treating the position as similar to a Stonewall Bird's.
