True, the discussion of gender titles is off-topic.

However, this isn't chess24.com. You may want to address your complaints to them.

I won't split off the conversation about gender, language and titles at this time, but I've no problem if someone wants to start a thread on that topic.

Sorry I view this discussion of the form of Grandmaster in romance and other languages as veering far off the main point.

She calls her self "Grandmaster."  She is good at English.  She is not a Grandmaster and should certainly know better.

This is reminiscent of a recent resume inflation controversy for one of the female candidates for USCF Executive Board.

A WGM who labels herself "Grandmaster" is a charlatan.

That doesn't explain why chess24 let the error go uncorrected. Nor, for that matter, why IM Guramishvili doesn't describe herself as an IM.

In formal, technical language in gendered languages (English is the only non-gendered major IE language if you discount Afrikaans Smiley), yes you can say gran maestro feminino for WGM and gran maestro absoluto for GM, but for a woman with GM, you would have to combine everything into something like gran maestra con título de gran maestro mascuilno absoluto.

I still see in Spanish that WGMs say, Soy gran maestra....  or WIMs say Soy maestra internacional without adding any distinction between WGM/GM or WIM/IM, but obviously this translated into English would not know the distinction. Perhaps this is how some no-natives confuse when they speak it in English? What happens is that in regular speech in these languages is that they just simplify and say gran maestra/maestra internacional. WFMs are also called maestra FIDE in spoken register. But I would not take this as an insult. I have a feeling that perhaps there is just a translation error somewhere. English is not very good at distinction Smiley

I believe it would be gran maestro femenino (French grand maître féminin).

Languages are fun. Of course, in languages which are gender specific, you can easily add "of women" to the end of the title for Women's GM. That would get away from any confusion.  for instance, WGM becomes La gran  maestra de la mujer (if I got my Spanish right).

I think that it also should be noted that in Romance languages like Spanish, "gran maestra" can refer to either a female grandmaster as, in a female with the male "GM" title, or a female with the woman's grandmaster title "WGM", so if you meet a WGM, you address them as "gran maestra".

Although some females with the male GM title can be addressed as "la gran maestro absoluto" breaking the grammatical gender rules because "gran maestro absoluto" is more technical to mean "GM", the full male title, it still is grammatically incorrect. If a female had a male GM title, to go by grammar rules, they need to be called "gran maestra", which in English translated as "Grandmaster". Being called "female grandmaster" or "woman's grandmaster" in Spanish, for example, are both "gran maestra", both translating back to English as "Grandmaster". The problem is that if you try to force it by distinguishing as they having male GM titles, you end up calling them "gran maestro", which would mean that they are male in person, not just having the male GM title.

Likewise, WIMs can be addressed as "maestra internacional". This obviously has ambiguity in English because English lacks grammatical gender, but native speakers of other languages than English may have this phenomenom.

So what I mean is that you an address both Judit Polgar and a 2300 WGM as "gran maestra", the former being GM, the latter WGM. The meaning is usually known by both the speaker and the interlocutor. In English, it might cause confusion though.

One thing that bugs me is that in the promos for S. Guramishvili's videos, she seems to always introduce herself as "Grandmaster Sopiko Guramishvili."  She is no Grandmaster, and in fact is a fairly weak IM.  Women's Grandmaster is an even lower title than IM.

Does anyone agree this is a bit cavalier and insulting to the many women who have actually earned the full Grandmaster title?

Yup.

Hello,

Sorry to unearth this thread, but having just discovered chess24, I have a few questions: are videos/ebooks downloadable or can we only access them through the website or the mobile app?
Basically, if I take a month of membership, will I be limited to using them for the current month...

Thanks!

I already contacted them and they replied very quickly, apologised several times and explained that actually their T&C is outdated and I can cancel my monthly payment whenever I like (provided that it is 2 weeks before the end). I was not duped!

Nice to hear that!  Smiley for chess24
