That got me thinking Eric, I have found that in the options of ditto I can remove supported properties, so if I remove text, unicode text and richtext format it makes life even easier:

Now I copy the position in chessbase
Next, whith my Google doc open and the cursor where I want my diagram, I go to ditto and simply double click on the last entry - Bingo!  Cool

The only thing is that ditto will not keep a record of my text clipboard entries doing this, but if I am only using it for doing the chess diagrams that is no big deal.

Sounds nice Keano, I wonder if you can automate step 3 though, so you don't have to do it every time.  Maybe a setting within "ditto" or some similar program could do this?

I have come up with my latest workaround for this, which I am going to stick with I think.

As people point out it seems Chessbase is copying both the graphic diagram and the text/fen to the clipboard entry. Actually as Tony says this is not a bad thing, it seems like it is up to the application to pick what it wants to paste from the clipboard entry.

Now wait for this latest one of mine you might like it:

1) Download and install a free open source clipboard manager called "ditto".

2) Copy the position in Chessbase

3) Click on the ditto icon to bring up the latest clipboard entry. Then click on "Properties" - there you can remove the text formats from the clipboard entry leaving only the diagram.

4) Paste in Google Doc and the diagram comes up no problem.

I am pretty happy with this solution  Cool

  • ChessBase10 (and most likely other versions of CB as well) is copying a position as both a picture/graphical and a text/FEn representations to the clipboard.

  • Yes, this can be very useful, sometimes I paste the formatted diagram into Word, and sometimes I use the 'Paste special' function to paste the FEN code or a picture ('bitmap'). Note that you get two options from ChessBase if you want to copy a game, too, try it! Wink

    Scid has the option

    Tools > Capture current board

It exports the position into a PNG file in your filesystem. I use it a lot.

    Salut,

Yes, I'm looking now. You would think in the settings Chessbase would give you to option to change this and create only the graphic, not the text/FEN, but I don't see it anywhere  Huh

Interesting stuff and thanks for the hints about using Arena or IrfanView!

Out of curiosity, I installed some tool to better examine the clipboard function in Win7. My findings are as follows:
    • ChessBase10 (and most likely other versions of CB as well) is copying a position as both a picture/graphical and a text/FEn representations to the clipboard.
    • IrfanView and Arena are sending positions only as picture/graphical representation to the clipbord.

When you have been copying from ChessBase to the clipboard, the receiving side has to choose during pasting between those two formats: MS Word seems to pick the graphical representations, while Google Docs take the text (which is not that helpful indeed).

Don't know who is doing right or wrong here but this seems to be the techical explanation behind this. Smiley

that link is not working for me, but anyhow I think I have found another solution even easier:

    1)Download Arena - a free program
2)Export position with option "to clipboard"
3)Paste in Google Doc and works a charm  Smiley

I have had another idea, now bear with me...

    I found this site:
    https://www.chessvideos.tv/chess-diagram-generator.php

Here I can paste a fen code and generate a diagram. Then I right click and go "copy image url"
Then in Google docs I go "Insert Image" and use the option "by url"

    Voila!

The only thing I am thinking is what if this online generator disappears, will need to find another...

Interesting. If you could save a diagram in Chessbase to the clipboard that would be ideal, but I presume this is not possible  Sad

Update: copy position in Chessbase - I can paste into Word as you say.

Pasting into Google docs it pastes the fen code - so presumably google docs needs some kind of script to transform the fen code?

I'd guess Gdocs is missing a chess font - so unless it's possible to include the font (via pdf perhaps?) or upload a free chess font, it's probably not possible...

Btw, if the size of the file is not important to keep down, and you just want to add diagrams quickly - then I've noticed that in Irfan View (a free picture editor you can find at for example CNET) you can copy a position in CB and when you paste it in IV it shows as a picture of the diagram. And copy/paste of pictures to Google docs shouldn't be a problem, though you'll probably need to scale down the pic after pasting.

Interesting comments, will try this tomorrow.

I have a few docs and up until now I have had to create the diagram from Chessbase and then upload it. Just feels like there should be a smarter way to do this.

    Thanks for the replies.

It's possible to do it in Word or Open Office, so if you create the document there can you then upload it and share it as a Google doc or does it vanish in the conversion?
