Surely, any gambit can be termed an immediate "refutation". But the main objective is to take your opponent out of their game and into unknown territory, of which it does quite effectively.

Further, QP openings can be stubborn beasts, with most defenses against them being well trodden, especially in regards to the infamous Queen's Gambit. So to win, I try and approach them unconventionally.

Cruel? All is fair in love and war my friend.  Roll Eyes

I don't ever really bother to worry about whether my opening choices are well received by other players but instead have concerns whether or not they are viable and lead to playable positions.

In this regard, The Englund is little more than a cruel joke for dear friends.

If the word 'refutation' has ever been able to be suitably applied to an opening then surely the Englund has earned this distinction.

Englund Gambit 1.d4 e5!?

I've been playing the Englund Gambit as of late with much success. If accepted, it takes your opponent out of their game from the start and leads to some interesting possibilities. But be forewarned, like most unorthodox openings, it won't be received well by players online. After winning a game with it, a certain player called me a "chump-ass rodent". Heh, I guess I'll take that as a compliment.

Here is an example of a 5 min blitz game I played recently against an opponent rated 1835. He fought well for awhile but was under time pressure throughout, like a fish out of water:

1.d4 e5 2.dxe5 d6 3.e4 Nc6 4.exd6 Bxd6 5.f4 Qh4+ 6.g3 Qe7 7.Bg2 Bc5 8.Nc3 Nf6 9.e5 O-O 10.Nge2 Rd8 11.Bd2 Ng4 12.Qc1 Bf2+ 13.Kf1 Bb6 14.Ne4 Rxd2 15.Qxd2 Ne3+ 16.Kg1 Nc4+ 17.Kf1 Nxd2+ 18.Nxd2 Qc5 19.Ne4 Qxc2 20.Re1 Nd4 -+
