There is harm in the change you suggest: A player who mates with a legal move but then doesn't have enough time to physically press the clock, still wins with the current rules. And that is as it should be.

As I understand it, a flag fall doesn't end the game until someone (the player or the arbiter) calls it. So the shoe is on the other foot: The player about to be mated should be required to stop the clocks (or at least call the flag fall) before the mate is on the board.

I realize there will sometimes be difficult conflicts with the current rules, but it may not be possible to avoid that in all circumstances. If the arbiter wasn't present, he has the option to ask spectators or other players if they saw what happened. And the modern time controls with increments get rid of the vast majority of these situations.

Apparently (http://chesscafe.com/about-us/), after 6 months you get the $50 back in the form of a $50 gift certificate to their shop,

I interpreted their subscription description to mean you get the $50 store credit only the first year.

Starting in the second year, when you continue to purchase annual subscriptions, you will not continue to receive a $50 store credit each year (I think).

I think I am completely done buying paperback books, and especially done buying chess paper books - due to the tremendous ease and utility of chess-specific ebooks (ForwardChess.com, Gambit, Everyman).
But I see that ChessCafe.com does sell Everyman ebooks.

(Note: just now I put two things in my shopping cart on ChessCafe.com, and then clicked 'Checkout'. But it took me to a screen that claims I have nothing in my cart! Yikes.)

Their description is not definitively clear, but that is how I interpret what they wrote.
Either way, the first one-year subscription might be sensible and worth it.

----

Except when it is mostly about issues concerning the clock in Blitz...
My favorite ChessCafe.com column was Geurt Gijssen's 'Arbiter'.
Yet I feel that Gijssen dodged the main point in my 2014-September letter (published recently, a few days before the website changed and required payment).

My letter/question argued that it would make more sense, and avoid potential problems, IF a player who delivers mate is nevertheless required to press his clock afterward, to prove he delivered mate before he ran out of time.

Imagine that a player has only a few seconds remaining at the start of his turn. In this case, very little additional imagination is needed to generate a problem scenario where the two players argue over whether the player's clock flag fell before versus after the player moved his piece to achieve mate.

Geurt's answer is usually that the Arbiter should be watching the game and thus the Arbiter could see whether the flag fall or the mating move occurred first. Maybe this could be reliable during some major grandmaster tournaments, but it is not realistic for the other 98.6% of tournament chess games between class level players etc. But even if an Arbiter is there, I see no harm in requiring the player to prove he has time left by pressing his clock just as he does for all other moves: there is no compelling justification for this exception.

In the debate it is said that - "mate ends the game instantly" - therefore it is illogical to even consider whether any subsequent actions like clock pressing should occur. But that is the lame trick of argument by controlling the definition that is the very core of the issue.

I went there mainly for Checkpoint.

My first reaction was, "So long, ChessCafe! It's been a good ten years." However, knowing about the $50 gift certificate may make me think twice.

Their online shop is awesome, though, and I will continue to buy from them in the future.

I suppose they do have downloadable products which may remove the shipping cost issue if you dont mind not having a physical book or DVD.

I always appreciated ChessCafe's columns and book reviews a lot.

The only problem I have with the 50 $ refundcheck is that the postage costs from the chesscafeshop to the Netherlands are 25 $ at least.
That is a bit too steep for me.

Through the years I have read many of Dan Heisman's articles. And also many book reviews.

But I'm not sure Chesscafe nowadays has so much unique information not found elsewhere on the net.

But I don't think $50 is much. At least not for me. About 2 chess books, and after 6 months you get a gift certificate and can buy those 2 books!  Smiley

Actually, 50 USD per year which you get back as a gift certificate is not at all unreasonable. There's a lot of good content in that archive.

I've picked up quite a few coaching tips from Dan Heisman over the years (though his approach to chess thinking is too verbal at times and he may have used up his best topics by now), and some offbeat opening ideas from Gary Lane. And Guert Gijssen's column was always useful for someone like me who occasionally volunteers as an arbiter. Though a column like his should really be freely available on the FIDE website, since it's such an obvious benefit to players and arbiters alike.

The columns by Dvoretsky and Müller surely must be high-quality training material, though I've never gotten started working on them. I will certainly consider registering at some point, namely when I have enough free time to seriously study these two columns!

But the sudden jump from free (if you remembered reading the columns within a month) to $50 will likely scare many readers off. Might have been better to take it in steps, by starting with $30 the first year, for example.

I was going to post something similar to this. I've mainly visited the site over the years to read the checkpoint column because i love reading book reviews (being a compulsive buyer of books doesnt help  Grin).

Now i'm gutted to find out that i'll no longer be able to do so unless i pay $50.

It's sad that there are fewer and fewer accessible book reviews on the web now.  Sad soon all i will be left with is John Elburgs.... Tongue

I do not blame the newest owners of ChessCafe.com for needing to generate revenue to fund their costs (hosting, content writers, etc).
But regardless...

There is no way I am going to pay $50 per year, or pay even once for forever, for the privilege of continuing to view ChessCafe.com.

If there is anyone here on ChessPub.com that used to view the free ChessCafe.com who intends to pay the $50, I would be curious to hear what it is that you most like about ChessCafe.com.
