I've been looking at the line 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.d3 Be7 5.O-O O-O 6.Re1 d6 7.a4 for a while and I haven't been able to find a fully convincing route to equality for Black.

7...Na5 8.Ba2 c5 9.c3 Nc6 10.Nbd2 Be6 11.Bxe6! fxe6 12.Nc4 looks slightly better for White as well.

You are right. White generally does better from this position.

Black's central pawn structure is ugly but the pawn on e6 prevents white from putting a knight on f5 or d5. Also, ...d5 can not be rulled out.

Fortunately for black in this case, engines have gotten better over the years.

(1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. d3 Be7 5. O-O O-O 6. Re1 d6 7. a4 Na5 8. Ba2 c5 9. Na3 Nc6!? 10. c3 Be6 11. Be6 fe6 12. Nc4)  12... h6! 13. Bd2 a6!?. Black can answer 14. b4 with ...b5!? when he is fully equal according to Stockfish17.

@ Barnaby

While I agree that Black seems to be fine after 8.h3, 8.c3 seems like a harder nut to crack.

I believe the line after 8. c3 d5 9. ed Nd5 is still very equal with chances for either side to outplay the other.  If White has any advantage, it is nominal and does not seem to lead to Black suffering or groveling for the half point.

7. .... Bg4 =

8. h3 Bh5

Lots of choices for White at move 8 and 9 but none gain a real advantage.  Black has nothing to fear in these lines.

Hi Guys!
Does anyone have a good opinion of what Black should do?

As well as the four choices outlined, there are a number of additional choices tried in practice, none of which seem out and out bad.

So there's 7. .. Bg4, 7. .. a5, 7. ..Nd4, 7. .. a6 and even 7. ..Re8

White seems to have a small edge regardless, so it's likely any key decisions will be later in the game. In the Spanish anti-Marshalls with a4, some of the top players will always play .. Be6 to blunt the pressure on f7. Perhaps it's necessary to find some ways of handling the positions that result after Bxe6 fxe6 as without .. Be6 , Black loses use of a defensive idea.

(edit) I had a look at my old games and in one of them I tried the .. Na5 and .. c5 idea. After that I played .. b6 and .. Bb7 and play resembled variations of the Zaitsev or Smyslov lines in the Spanish. That I lost quickly was more to do with defending the Spanish incorrectly than to any direct hole in the .. b6, .. Bb7 idea. (/edit)

wouldn't worry its close enough, a mod will change it if they deem fit.

on this a4 line I used to think it was a great try for White, and it is decent, but plenty of complex play lies ahead. I'll leave it to someone who has this in their current repertoire to provide the info.

Ah sorry, wasn't sure what to name it since everything in the Two Knights section was about 4.Ng5. Can I edit the title somewhere? I'm new here Smiley

7...Be6 8.Bxe6!? is kind of annoying according to me
7...Na5 8.Ba2 c5 9.c3 Nc6 10.Nbd2 Be6 11.Bxe6! fxe6 12.Nc4 looks slightly better for White as well.
7...Kh8 MIGHT be okay, but I don't trust it completely yet.
7...h6 followed by ...Nh7-g5 (or ...Kh8, ...f5) MIGHT be okay as well.

Does anyone have a good opinion of what Black should do? And please don't refer to literature, I've read it all.  Smiley
