In CBlight premium is a search tab where you can enter the material, #of stones for white and black. Maybe you have to add this in CB12 too.

Thanks for the reply. I believe that CB light and CB reader are 2 names for the same thing.

There is a material tab on CB 12 reader, but the material is implicit in the position. When you "copy board" from an existing game and search it works without specifying material but when you create a position it does not. There are exactly 2 white pawns and 1 black pawn in the position I created, no rooks, queens, knights, bishops. See diagram.

My conclusion: Sloppy programming.

Does CB 12 itself (not the reader) behave like this?

I have not had any luck doing this.

1) Open a chessbase database like Big Database 2012

2) View the games

3) right click -> edit ->filter games

4) go to position tab

4) copy pieces to get the position below

5) use "look for" board and click OK.

I get games with the position I created -- Plus a whole bunch of other pieces! My position has 2Ks, 2WPs, 1BP, period. I get games like Adams-Levitt 1989, with a bunch of extra pawns, Rooks, and a Knight.

There should be some way to search for that exact position. When I "Copy Board" from a game and then filter it works OK.
