Edmar Mednis, How to Play Good Opening Moves, will guide you in how to think about the opening if you are out of book--which you will be in every game, and usually quite early if you are under 1600. Mednis shows you how to think "in opening mode," one might say, the way you think about king activity, zugzwang, etc in "endgame mode." The Watson series is more like a survey that goes into a bit of detail about every important contemporary opening system. It's great if you want that.

Check out the Mastering the Opening: Unlocking the Mysteries of the Modern Chess Openings Series by John Watson. I think they are exactly what you are looking for. If not, then perhaps My System or Improve Your Chess will help?

Here's a link to the Amazon.com reviews of Mastering the Opening vol. 1.

I came in to suggest FCO.

I think what you want is Tarrasch's The Game of Chess. I have no idea why it's so underrated, I think it's a brilliant book. It has the middlegame and end as well.

Two good beginner books on general opening principles are Seirawan's Winning Chess Openings and Emms' Discovering Chess Openings. Either of those should give you the background you need to study openings more specifically.

Where can I find a book that explains general, not specific, openings? I have  FCO but feel I need a basic book on beginner, general openings. I need book in kindle due to eye trouble.
