I am particulary interested in his chapter about the Russian Roullette Variation 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.e5 Nd7 5.Nf3!? c5 6.dc5 Nc6 7.Bf4
Does he come up with some new fresh ideas in this line or is he just giving his analyses from the first edition ?

Does he say something about the variations where black isn't winning back the pawn on c5 immedately but instead goes for a waiting strategy with ..a6, Be7(with the crude but annoying idea g5 in some lines to undermine the defense of the e5 pawn) ?
Also interesting is the gambit continuation 7.. Bxc5 (Nxc5!?) 8.Bd3 a6 9.Qe2 Qc7 (f6 10.exf Nxf6 12.0-0-0 Russian Roullette!) 10.0-0 Nd4!? 11.Nxd4 Bxd4 12.Rfe1

Would be very helpful to get a detailed answer Smiley

I agree that Moskalenko's books are about How to play and not What to play

Moskalenko doesn't analyse Classical French with Be7 without Nc6..

Conveniently for Moskalenko, I suspect this is also less work for the author than taking responsibility for deep, up-to-date and accurate analysis, or presenting a coherent repertoire with all bases covered...

I have the original Flexible French, and it was inspirational, but the analysis needed to be expanded in many places. But OK, there are a lot of authors publishing really good, variation-heavy books on the French these days (Berg, Ntirlis, Watson, Vitiugov, Maksimovic/Antic as well as several "enemies" from the White side), so there should be room for some books that are more about explanations and ideas. (Btw, is it just my impression that the French is one of those openings that get a lot more books devoted to it than its actual popularity would suggest?)

One line I noticed that is popular recently: The Classical Steinitz with ...Be7, but without an early ...Nc6. This seems to give some extra/different options against the dxc5 lines, and also makes a quick ...b6/...Ba6 possible in other lines. Does Moskalenko cover this? I.e. 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.e5 Nfd7 5.f4 c5 6.Nf3 Be7 7.Be3 0-0.

- Jakovenko-Morozevich Moscow 2007
I think that it is moreless obsolete, because 11.Nb3 replaced 11.Qf2 and other moves. I think that nobody shows way how to equalize for black

- Rajlich-Cato the Younger - Moskalenko moreless only mentioned this game, but black positions is very hard. Of course I know who are players - Rajlich--> Rajlich, Krasenkow, Cato the Younger - mainly "freestyle master" Nelson Hernandez and his team.

-7..Be7 - I think that 8.Qd2 0-0 9.dxc5 poses problems for black to solve...

Still, I have really lot of books about French (Moskalenko, Watson, Psakhis etc) and they are all quite interesting...

In the free sample pdf, you can read :

From theoretical point of view I think that one of the most problematic is chapter about Classical French - line with 7..cd4 8.Nxd4 Bc5 - Jakovenko-Morozevich Moscow 2007 - there is lot of new problems for black in the last yeats, 7..Qb6 8.Na4 when is mentioned game Rajlich-Cato the Younger playchess.com 2007 with "compensation" but in fact is whole line moreless busted..

Interesting POV ...

I like buying chess books about French Defence (and I have many now Smiley )...I can decide when it can be fruitful to buy or not to buy a new one, because I can guess it will enlightened some ideas I missed to record.

Jakovenko-Morozevich Moscow 2007 is viewable at
http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1480807

11...Qe7 was given in chesspub updates : Shomoev-Chebotarev,Tomsk 2006 (september 2006) and Radjabov-Ivanchuk, Linares 2008 (may 2008)
12...f6!? in chesspub update (december 2007) and there as some analysis for chesspub paying members

For  Rajlich-Cato the Younger games or analysis,...,you can check on internet who are Rajlich and "Cato" before using the analysis of Boleslakvsky move Na4  Grin

At current time, I focus more about news for variation of 7...Be7!? line. Game example : Pacher-Prusikin,Chur 2010 (given by Eingorn) or Kokarev-Maslak,Serpukhovv 2008 Russia cup final

Sometimes I check games in that kind of competition in Russia to get news about new OTB games with French defence.

Yes, I read, same way as I own both Flexible & Even More Flexible.

It's not my first Moskalenko's book (in fact, except Fabulous Budapest i have all Moskalenko books ) and I like his writing. On other side this books offers much less new & actualized material than for example Avrukh's 1.d4 1A book (if you compare it with predecessor ).

During reading "Even More" i got time to time feeling that I have reprint in my hands more than that I have new and enlarged edition.

What is strange for me, that there is so a few new games since 2008 and some comments looked crazy from pure logical point of view (in a game played recently - in 2009 etc) ..

Moskalenko justifies exactly why there are not so much games in his new book : replacing the quantity of raw moves by words explaining the ideas.

Sure, some previous reviews  from his work had surely a psychologicial effect, about the writing of "Foreword" chapter ... no need to recall bad chessvibes stories  Roll Eyes

For the "recent" qualifier, it's often the case that some theoritical lines have been dismissed  long time ago (for White or Black) because of one special games, moves or analysiis.

I am slightly disappointed.
Generally it's based on previous Moskalenko book "The Flexible french defence" and lot of stuff is morelless directly copied. I dont have any doubt that Moskalenko fullfilled all promises /There are twelve new chapters on lines that have grown in importance, 28 more games, and throughout Moskalenko has found hundreds of improvements, alternatives, new ideas and fresh weapons that will delight and surprise the reader./ but still looked nearly identical to previous book.

What is strange for me, that there is so a few new games since 2008 and some comments looked crazy from pure logical point of view (in a game played recently - in 2009 etc) or theoretical point of view (generally I think that in the Classical French is theory miles and miles deeper than in Moskalenko lines).

On other side there is lot of interesting verbal explanations and lot of ideas fr what I can recommend this book, but...

The previous work was a bank of ideas in the French Defence, like a braimstorming. Very interesting.

Every new book on the French is welcome, except the ones focused to help the White side  Cheesy

https://www.newinchess.com/The_Even_More_Flexible_French-p-9010.html

Judging from the description this is really a 2nd edition of his 2008 The Flexible French. That one had an eclectic mix of various French lines rather than a single, coherent repertoire. These lines received the greatest amount of coverage:
- Advance: Various ...Nh6-based lines
- Advance: 5...Qb6 6.a3 c4
- Tarrasch: 3...Be7
- Tarrasch: 3...Nf6
- Tarrasch: 3...c5 4.exd5 Qxd5
- Classical: MacCutcheon
- Classical: Steinitz (various lines)
- Classical: 5.Nf3 (/2 knights variation main line); the main line with 0-0-0 for White
- Winawer: Portisch-Hook variation ("Black Queen Blues")

The description mentions "hundreds of improvements, alternatives, new ideas and fresh weapons", but you'd suspect the backbone structure of the book to mostly remain the same, with updates.

The announced page count (304) is 24 more than the original book's 280.

A new book by Moskalenko. I wonder what will be the lines covered in this new book. Does anyone have an idea?
