I wonder what Timman has to say about Browne in the latest NIC.  I recall the two trading wins in the Browne System (in the 6. Bg5 Najdorf) in the 1970s.

Another historical bit:  at around the 6-minute mark in this video, Larsen (interviewed in bed, and in Dutch) speaks of, and imitates, the nervousness of "this new young American-Australian grandmaster."  He says some find it very irritating, but he doesn't.

Walter Browne was the first GM I ever played. I was in high school around 1980 and got to play him in a simul. He was White, and we played a Spanish Exchange variation. I got an equal game, but botched the endgame when I went the wrong way with my king. He punished my mistake very efficiently. Even so, mine was one of the last games to finish. I think he only gave up a couple of draws that day. I remember being impressed with how easily he crushed most people in the opening.

I met him a couple times as an adult. He was always pleasant with me. I will miss him.

Below is another of his most well-known games.  (This line of the Petroff, including 13...c6, had been considered fine for Black.  It was later revived with the pawn-offer 13...Be6.)
I quite like Larsen-Browne, US Open 1972 (0-1 in a Schmid Benoni), but I can't post that one so readily.

Small personal anecdote:  After losing to then-US Champion Browne and his bishop-pair in a simul which lasted into the wee hours, I ran into him at a Waffle House or the like.  We sat and ate together, and he brought up our endgame.  "You know where you played Bh6?  You should have played Bf6.  That would have forced a draw after ..."

I'll always remember him for this game, which was commented by him in one of the first chess books I read. A great advertisement for the QG too! Smiley
