Speelman analyzed the Cohn-Rubinstein endgame in detail in Analysing the Endgame.

The same error appears in various books in analysing the famous Cohn-Rubinstein ending; I think possibly even in one sub-variation of some edition of the famous Averbakh/Maizelis book, though that may be libellous. Jon Speelman either showed it to me once or it's in one of his books; he says or said he was shown the position by Jonathan Mestel.

This is particularly sad. Generally when people resign in a drawn position, they would have lost anyways because they didn't see an important idea (Svidler). In this case, he might well have found a4 when he got closer to it, and it is all pretty forced until then.

Those who want to go by my perverse footsteps play such pawn structure with fuzzy atypical still strategic orientations

That is why I only resign if I know that I am lost. If I think that maybe I might be 90% lost but actually not really, I rather play on a bit until it is actually obvious.

This also a warning for everyone to study endgames more, if GM vs. GM messed up Smiley

He must have missed the idea of a4.
There are many other such examples. Svidler has at least 2 times done such thing:

http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1272144

The last example I once used in an article: http://chess-brabo.blogspot.be/2015/01/optical-illusions.html

Today at the Politiken Cup, Tiger Hillarp Persson (on move as White against Markus Ragger) threw in the towel in this position:
