Mildly off topic but having got Negi to spy on the enemy, I don't think his 'no complex lines vs sidelines' has done the chapters on the 7.. o-o Winaver any particular favours in places.

Intrinsic to the format of course. Trying to find an advantage everywhere is against the fundamentals of chess, and there's a limit to how much work anyone can sanely put in!

The 8 .. Nbc6 stuff has 'always' felt like it was a bit on the edge in terms of reliability. Definitely more so than 8.. f5 or, in recent years, the poisoned pawn.

The whole 13.. b5 was basically nearly new for the Berg book, so definite scope for it to have run into trouble.

This is the line Sadler refers to in NIC 2014/8, from Confused_by_Theory's game extract:

7...  O-O 8.  Bd3 f5  9.  exf6 Rxf6 10.  Bg5 Rf7 11.  Qh5 g6 12.  Qd1 Qa5 13.  Nf3 Rxf3 14.  gxf3 Qxc3 15.  Kf1 c4 16.  Bxe7 cxd3 17.  cxd3 Qxd4 18.  h4 Nc6 19.  Bg5 Qe5 20.  f4 Qg7 and now Negi (page 280) gives 21. f5 N.

Negi (page 300) also goes further than Berg in the line you refer to, namely 8...  Nbc6 9.  Qh5 Ng6 10.  Nf3 Qc7 11.  Be3 c4 12.  Bxg6 fxg6 13.  Qg4 b5. Sadler does not refer to this line in his article, which was the original poster's question. I have heard on the grapevine that this line is under genuine pressure for Black, but I don't play it myself for either colour and I don't know the basis for this opinion.

Are you talking about the line in 7. Dg4 0-0? The main line of Berg is 13...b5, then all the way to 15. Sg5 by Negi. It is in his first volume, I think the line goes to something where he brings the knight back with Sg1.

This article is in New In Chess 2014/8. The line is at Negi p280 as cited in Confused's note, where Negi gives 21.f5 N (not considered by Berg). After a few more moves Negi concludes that Black is under "slight but continuing pressure", which is not the sort of verdict to scare off the average Winawer player (although heaven forbid there should be such a person). Berg also offers perfectly satisfactory alternatives earlier on.

Its 'just' 8.. Qa5 ^ 9 Ne2 o-o in that last line. As I remember what Negi gives there was a bit new - Berg 'only' gives it 7 pages for the multiple options - so I suspect there might not be that much overlap.

That sort of thing is inevitable for repitoire books of course. Proper refutation much less likely.

Hello.

I looked in Negi's book (as I don't have any of Berg's books...yet). Here is what I found out:

have a nice day.

Hi, Heard that there is a line in French where Negi refute Berg?
If so, which one?

Dont remember if it was a refutation but Sadler cross reviewed both books and found that Negi's line put Berg's under a lot of pressure in a winawer i think, but cant remember which one. I'll try to find the issue and let you know, if no-one else answers.
