Yes, this is stupid. Here is a famous endgame concept, "the barrier." Black cannot bring his king in to support the pawn fast enough because the light-square approaches are illegal and the dark-square approaches fail to double attack, e.g. 1...Ke3 2. Nf1+. If I ever needed convincing that this book was a fraud, I don't anymore.

Not much more to be said. Thanks for providing the link to Edward Winter's review.

I agree that the quotation is odd. Let's move on shall we? I can't make sense of it.
Is Winter a real person by the way? I had 'him' as a shadowy chess-obsessed cabal of malevolent mid-European editors operating under a single name. Or something.

I have to admit that I don't understand this. I'm very selective when it comes to what I spend time reviewing. I don't bother with 99% of self-published books because I know they're garbage. I am reticent to review books by one insanely prolific chess author (not hard to guess who) anymore because (a) I can't stand his writing and (b) I'm told I can't go to his favorite chess club lest I be lynched.

The book you're reading - or, rather, that you're using Winter's page to pull quotes from - is fraudulent. The quote is nearly nonsensical. Why waste your time when there's so much better material out there? Or do you just want to engage in polemics?

Why are you worried about what a fraudulent author has to say about anything?

For the same reason that you do not judge chess books by their cover when you write your reviews.

Question: How much truth is in the above quoted statement, especially in the second sentence?

It sounds like total nonsense, does that mean that Carlsen's endgame against Pelletier wasn't an endgame?! Huh

I would say all sorts of double attack, e.g. King attacks 2 adjascent pieces, pawn forks (obviously Knight forks too), Bishop checks King while also attacking a Rook (e.g. Kg1, Ra7 and Bb6+), Rook attacks 2 targets on the 2nd rank, etc.

So I would say: "the concept of the double attack may no longer suffice to net the most effective gain."

Double attacks (with the queen and knight especially) still occur frequently in the endgame.

.
The author of My 61 Memorable Games wrote the following on page 738:

"The endgame is not determined by the piece population.  The endgame begins when combinations based on the concept of the double attack no longer suffice to net the most effective gain."

Question: How much truth is in the above quoted statement, especially in the second sentence?
