Thanks for the info. Maybe I'll just buy CB14, where it can be turned off or fine-tuned so that it might actually be a desirable feature. Seems like a bit of a protection racket--"nice version you got there, it'd be a shame if something happened to it."

I wonder if the ChessBase Online function will soon stop working on CB12 - I remember that it stopped working on CB11 when CB13 came out! Sad

It does seem to have stopped now.

They changed how the save functions work now. So Ctl + S saves the game (like replace used to do) and now there also is Save Game As, which should do what save game used to do.

Ok, thanks, weird that they change this after so very long.

Is there any way to turn off or even to adjust the obnoxious variation colors (all options for the next move at the given heirarchical level highlighted in, for me, a disgusting orange backgrond)? I am using CB 12.

In CB14 this is a much nicer light yellow, and you can turn it off with the 'Dye actual variation' setting. I guess you can always use a previous version of CB12.

I complained/asked about this to CB Support. They thanked me for my message and said "no". Roll Eyes

I've just started using CB14 and the only two differences I've noticed so far are that the windows title bars are blue with a circular design on the right (rather than the standard system colour) and Ctrl + R (replace game) wouldn't work for me.

Paragraphs — tick

This doesn't appear on my version of CB14, see their screenshot: http://help.chessbase.com/CBase/14/Eng/index.html?001560.htm, although 'Paragraph' and 'Justify' are still mentioned lower down on this page.

I've never worked out how to get the variations labelled in this way (using Chessbase 13). What setting do I need to change to achieve this?

A recent update to ChessBase 12 has completely messed things up for me.

To start with there's now highlighting when you reach a variation junction, which is really annoying and doesn't go away.

And much worse, they've reverted the tree structure to an earlier ChessBase format, where variations are embedded instead of being split and labelled A), B), C), A1), A2) and so forth. This is a total nightmare.

Presumably ChessBase 14 does the same thing?

Huh

Edit: Ah, no, I've found the problem. The update had turned structured variations off. Thank f*** for that.

It has been stable for me so far. The only bug I've run into so far is that the piece probability window shows data for both black and white pieces, regardless of which one you've selected. So clicking white queen shows data for both black and white queen. Clicking black queen shows the same data. No crashes so far.

The main draw for me was at that $130 price I was getting the new Chessbase, a new big 2017 database plus the update service for a year (my previous database I think was 2010 or 2008 + years of dumping twic into it), and 1 year of premium playchess service I believe.

I'll post again after I've spent some more time with it.

Is CB 14 a pretty stable version?

As I recall it was usually not a great idea to jump on the bandwagon immediately.
