The idea of playing someone who is spinning some little doodad is pretty off-putting.
(Maybe this helps burnish my credentials as a dinosaur or whatnot.  Side note:  I was reminded of a tournament in the 1970s during which participants Keres and Hort wore "parlor slippers" in view of the creaking floor.)

At the Limburg Open http://limburgopen.nl/nederlands/nieuws.php the chess-stall was selling fidget spinners in the tournament hall. I bought 1 for my son and 1 for my daughter. However I asked my son not to use it during his games.

I expect after the summer holidays the hype will be finished just like it was with the rainbow looms a couple of years ago.

This device appearing at OTB chess events in clubs would most likely be prohibited but I'm curious about why they would be considered "distracting". We're talking about a device that is no more than 2" diameter and is very quiet. I'd like to hear some thoughts on this topic.
