I was wondering what the ratio of g3s to "other stuff" you typically see in, let's say, the 1900-2300 rating range.

Most of the other stuff is quite decent, so players not liking main line positions in the Dutch will give them a try.

If your opponent plays the London, Torre or Tromp, a main line Dutch with c4 and g3 is perhaps unlikely.

Interesting - I actually had the same experience in my limited games with 1 d4 e6 - in fact I think all three or four of them went 2 e4. To be fair, I think one of those guys was a Trompowsky player, and another normally played 1 e4.

In my experience when I played Leningrad Dutch several years ago most games where none g3 lines regardless of rating. If they knew theory well then they played g3 systems. If they started with 1 c4 move order they usually played a Bg2 and d3 based setup with a later e4.

About 1 d4 e6 I have met 2 e4 more often than I expected. I have even met it in correspondence chess. The reason is  probebly that white 1 d4 players fears Dutch more than French or that the play some anti Dutch system that are ruled out in this move order.

There was some book that joked "When I prepare for tournament I play Leningrad. When playing the games I play vs anti Dutch".

Thanks for all your responses, this has been very useful. Slightly off-topic - has much changed in the "Anti-Dutches" since Winning with the Stonewall Dutch?

I use the Dutch only against 1.c4, 1.Nf3 etc., so I don't have to worry about these sidelines. Wink

Of course, then you might face systems with d3 looking for an early e4. But I don't worry too much about this stuff. By delaying ...e6, I have the opportunity to play ...e5 in one move. Wink

Im only about 15-1600 so it probably doesnt count...and i tend to play the dutch via 1...e6 just because i'm lazy, although 1 or 2 of the anti dutch lines are supposed to quite tough for black to overcome i think, so until i study them, i'm happy to avoid them.

I had one game where a guy played 2 e4 but didnt seem to know the french very well - which I felt was odd, because isnt it likely that because I opened 1...e6 I also play the french? (I dont normally but thats a diffrent matter  Grin)

I think i have only faced non g3 dutch lines maybe 10-15% of the time in addition to that game.

In the years that I played the Dutch (always via 1.d4 f5) against primarily 2000-2300 rated opposition, I met sidelines (without a quick c2-c4) nearly half of the time.  Also, about a third of the times that my opponent played c2-c4, they did not continue with a kingside fianchetto.

By popularity, the sidelines I saw most were 2.Nc3, The Staunton Gambit, 3.Bg5, and 2.g4.

At first I worried about the sidelines, but eventually I came to enjoy facing them.  Why are we playing the Dutch if we don't want to unbalance the game and play for a win, even with some risk involved?  From that point of view, 2.g4 and The Staunton should be encouraged!  I admit that I never entirely liked my positions after 2.Nc3, but I never liked White's position that much more, anyway.

Against players in that range (and below), starting with 1...d6 gives me all the psychological edge I need. I know many of them were itching to throw the Staunton, 2.Nc3, etc. at the Dutch.

From an objective, theoretical perspective, however, allowing all the Anti-Dutch lines is likely a better choice than being forced into the Pirc/Modern complex. But in practice I've had some problems against 2.e4 and 2.Nc3. I especially remember a thematic blitz tournament where 1.d4 f5 was mandatory: As I recall it I won all my White games, where I played into main lines, but lost all my Black games to the Staunton!

I like Williams' and McDonald's choices against the Anti-Dutch lines in their respective Dutch repertoire books. But with one exception: They both recommend 2.Bg5 h6?!? which is hard to trust, and anyway I've long been partial to 2.Bg5 g6 as given by Kindermann (and later by Malaniuk). To be honest, when I play 1.d4 f5 it's often because I'm expecting and hoping for 2.Bg5 (but don't tell my opponents that!).

I play 1.d4 f5 occasionally, but I mostly reach the Dutch from 1.d4 d6 or 1.Nf3 d6. I'm happy to report that's very likely to lead to a "real" Leningrad Dutch, and especially to the main lines. That many of my opponents are likely out of book soon and annoyed that they didn't get the chance to play an Anti-Dutch is just an added bonus!

Of course 1.d4 d6 requires being willing to play the Pirc, Modern, Philidor or Czech Pirc. There's no such thing as a free lunch...

I've dabbled in 1.d4 e6 as well, and White players seem less likely to go 2.e4 there than against 1.d4 d6. You still want to prepare the French instead of bluffing, of course.

If you are worried about the sidelines, then the Dutch is not the opening for you.

There is some psychology here. Many Dutch players want to be "aggressive", so they are happy when white plays a positional main line, but extremely uncomfortable when white plays in gambit style. Other Dutch players are just looking for "unclear" positions, so they are more worried by the positional play, and welcome any attempts by white to mix it up.

From my own limited experience as black after 1.d4 f5, most white players bash out their sideline as if I should be afraid, but quickly become confused when I have a decent reply ready. I think they are more used to meeting the first type of Dutch player.

P.S. I don't often play 1.d4 as white, but when I face the Dutch I choose a sideline - 4.g4.

I got 8x Bg5, 6x Nc3 and 5x e4 in the 76 games.
If you wonder what about the rest then a lot of c4,Nf3 games take independent tracks with Bf4, Bg5,...

Thanks for your reply. Is it mostly 2 Nc3 and 2 Bg5 you meet when White avoids c4/Nf3/g3 ?

I checked my Dutch standard games against opponents in that range. In only 28 out of 76 my opponent chose for 2.g3 so expect very often other stuff. In some cases however later we still transposed to g3 lines.

Frequency of Dutch Sidelines vs Main Lines?

I'm looking to take up the Dutch as an occasional weapon, but I'm a bit worried about the prospect of having to deal with all the options White has on moves 2 and 3 (Nc3s, Bg5s, g4s, etc.).

I was wondering what the ratio of g3s to "other stuff" you typically see in, let's say, the 1900-2300 rating range. I know people often have similar concerns to mine above about playing 1 e4 e5 with Black, but I find that in practice White tends to stick to his Spanishes, Italians and Scotches. Is it a similar situation here?

Thanks.
