Incidentallly, I noticed that Ulf's main weapon vs. 1.e4 is now the French Rubinstein with 4...Nd7, which is very much in his style. I wonder if an "How Ulf Beats White" (or "Draws with Black")  Roll Eyes book is going to be published too... Cool

I got the book. Although I generally tend to like it, the coverage of the Closed Catalan is almost non-existent (and it's one of Black's main weapons, at least at club level). I am puzzled by the only game vs. the Dutch Stonewall, too, in which Ulf goes for and early Nbd2. Coverage of this line is weak, too, in my opinion. Also after 1.Nf3 there is no coverage of 1...Nc6 (virtually forcing 2.d4 if you're not an 1.e4 nor 1.c4 player) nor of 1...b6 (sometimes played from my experience)

TD, do you have any opinions (even if subjective) on the book?

I haven't studied the book yet, but like I said earlier I think it is more an overview of Andersson's ways to handle certain Black defences. It is certainly not a repertoire book. I am no fan of Lakdawala's writing style, but in this book it is less verbose than in his Everyman books.
I think the Exercises chapter is very useful. It is a games based book, but with very interesting variations and explanations within the games.
My own repertoire has similarities with Andersson's and I admire his style, so for me it's certainly a good buy!

Ulf versus the KID: 15 games
Pseudo-Grunfeld: 5 games
QID & Hedgehog: 7 games
Quadruple fianchetto lines: 3 games
Reti: 2 games
Catalan: 5 games
Tarrasch: 3 games
Symmetrical English: 11 games
Modern, Pirc & Accelerated Dragon: 4 games
Dutch: 3 games
Exchange Slav: 3 games

exercises: 39

Does it need to have lots of variations?

To be a good chess book, no.

To provide decent repertoire guidance for white in the Catalan in 20 pages, yes.

The page count on the King's Indian is pretty hefty. Presumably there's a decent amount of material there?

Apart from that, each chapter seems around 20 pages, which doesn't seem like a lot room for chess content, given Lakadawala's verbose style (nothing against his style---i actually like his books. just noting that he tends to be light on variations and heavy on text).

TD, do you have any opinions (even if subjective) on the book?

OK, so it's misleading advertisement to call it a repertoire.

But is it possible the content that's actually there is still good? If it is, "Waste of money" is too strong an assessment.

Surprising to hear even the Catalan coverage is bad. Ulf has played that a lot.

They advertise it as a repertoire. Coverage of Leningrad Dutch is terrible (only one paragraph about Qe8 main line). Pirc chapter is not good also, same with Catalan .Waste of money.

Some minor openings are also not mentioned. Tarrasch coverage is VERY superficial.

It's not a fully covered repertoire book. More an overview of the kind of games Andersson plays with white.

He didn't adress 1.Nf3 Nc6 at all.

Andersson only encountered 1...Nc6 3 times in my DB... He play(s)(ed) 2.d4

Then is White playing 1.Nf3 d5 2.c4 rather than 2.d4?

In this book, yes. But Andersson mostly plays 2.d4.

That's why I asked, so is White prepared to face 2...d4? I've rarely seen Andersson play this line as White.

Just one game in the book (Fernandez 1974). Lakdawala says 2.c4 is Andersson's preferred move order, which is not true.
