Mamedyarov Attack (1.c4 Nf6 2.Nf3 e6 3.e3 Be7 4.Nc3 0-0 5.Bb2 Bb7 6.Qc2)

There must be a minor typo in the moves there, black plays Bb7 without touching the b-pawn.

Anyway, Mamedyarov Attack! It has a name! Does Mamedyarov follow up with Bd3, h3, g4, as a new guy at the club was doing? (Actually I began with ...e5, but I think he would have played the same no matter what I did.) I found it interesting, by no means all that easy to punish. I assumed it was some online rubbish.

Fast forward a couple of weeks, and one of the regulars showed up late to play some blitz: he trotted out the same opening. Quelle surprise. Having had time to reflect on the best way to meet it, plus considering he's no Mamedyarov, I summarily destroyed him. Then I said, "Let me guess, some stranger showed up at {other club} and played this way against you, and you thought it would be worth trying yourself." He answered, "Yes, but I won't be playing it again."

Sure, I copied the first opening moves in the "Mamedyarov Attack" chapter, and I missed 5.b3 b6, sorry.

And yes, there is often a Rg1 / Bd3 and g4 / h4 attack in the games from the book. Also an early Ng5 in a game.

Back to the book, I like the fact that he cares to explain plans and ideas and not just variations. On another side, it is not easy to build a repertoire with these lines only, for example there is absolutely nothing vs. the King's Indian or the Queen's Gambit Accepted, and coverage of some major defenses is too limited IMHO. It reminds me of the "Secrets of Opening Surprises", or the "Dangerous Weapons" series. Of course the ideas are really original, some of them are deceptively non-aggressive openings, but with a lot of poison in them, like the Jobava System.

Hello,

I have the book. Basically the format is similar to the first volume, i.e. not a complete repertorie, but a collection of essays on some lines, this time for White.

Briefly, the lines covered / suggested are:

PART I - Sidelines in Mainsteram Openings:

Queen's Gambit Declined with Nf3 and Bg5, often with an early Bxf6, and without an early Nc3.

Slav Defense with 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.g3

Catalan Opening, various sidelines for White

English Opening, various sidelines for White in the 1...c5 English

Gruenfeld Defense 3.g3 c6

Gruenfeld Defense 3.g3 Bg7

Anti-Gruenfeld: 1.Nf3 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.cxd5 Nxd5 5.Qc2

PART II - Systems

Mamedyarov Attack (1.c4 Nf6 2.Nf3 e6 3.e3 Be7 4.Nc3 0-0 5.Bb2 Bb7 6.Qc2)

Jobava System (1.d4 Nf6 2.Nc3 d5 3.Bf4)

PART III - Ambitions & Surprises

Larsen's Opening 1.b3, a few sidelines

English Opening, a few ideas with an early g2-g4

Dutch Opening 1.d4 and 2.c4 with an early h2-h4 vs. early ...g6

Slav Defense, a few gambit lines for White

Queen's Gambit Declined, early g2-g4 and system with Bf4 and 0-0-0

Sicilian Defense, a main line Bg5 Najdorf with an early Bb5 sac for White. (I found this game / chapter a bit out of place, by the way).

In the second part of the book there are a lot of games / ideas by Dubov with White.

All considered, I found the book an original, deeply analyzed book. A worthy sequel to Volume 1, IMHO, but I understand it might not be to everyone's taste. It is some sort of a labor of love. Plenty of new ideas.

Hope this is of some help.

Just wondered whether anyone had this recently released publication....if so would you be prepared to share what variations the author looks at in the Slav, Catalan and English...?

The index from the publisher really doesn't offer any clues and although I prefer to play rear lines these days I don't want to invest in a book to find there is nothing much of interest in it.
